Well I am a bit warry of the fact that NISA is making the port on their own and that it wasn't something that Falcon made. That being said, I don't know how good NISA is at developing games compared to their horrible translations.
Well the graphics aren't so much of an issue when you are just porting a complete product from one device to another. They mostly deal with the hardware compatability and gettng the source code to build on the new device; aka using the GCC or the MSVC etc. (i've done port work myself on smaller games.). When they do get bugs they will mostly be with the engine or the driver backend and not with the actual game assets. At least this is the case with most ports; porting a game the size of Ys 8 should not be much more difficult then porting a game the size of Disgaea (actually Disgaea would have been larger and possibly more difficult). Most companies dislike making ports because they aren't working on something new and have to go back into their old code to get it to run.
I've got most of them already. They released most of the DLC on the PSVita version in Japan and the rest are on their way.
There is a reason why I made the distinction of the Japanese version of the game. The PSVita version of the game in the NA does not get the content that was released with the playstation 4 special edition (which is what the PC and the NA PS4 version are based on). The Vita in Japan however, did get some of that DLC already and will be getting all of it later.
The reason it is "exclusive content" is because NISA did not recieve the Vita DLC when they got their version of the game and for whatever reason the company decided not to continue to support the game much past release.
Everyone else I've talked to said that it has the best story of any Ys yet.
(Those that played in it Japanese)
I'm also finding the claim that it is "weak" compared to others in the series hard to believe considering just how much more dialogue and such there is in this one and just how skeletal the story is in most previous Ys games.
Either way, you're the first person I've talked to who played it in Japanese who claims that the story is weak compared to other Ys games, everyone else I know has said the opposite.
It's only been review sites saying the story isn't great, but that can easily be blamed on the terrible localization.
Sigh, on the Japanese version the some of the content did get added and Falcon confirmed that they will be adding the rest later down the line. On the NA version, NISA confirmed that they will not be adding it.
I never said the story sucked, I just feel that in the context of other Ys titles it is fairly weak. Its strong in the context of other RPGs, but it just isnt an amazing story imo. The characters are all great of course, but for instance, the story in memories of celceta or Ys 7 was much more compelling.
I honestly believe that whether or not you will love the story of this game is all subjective but I will justify my own statement. One of the things that really made the story feel weak for me, was that it revolved more around the escaping the island. Ussually, Ys games have some central problem that you are trying to deal with; and in this game it was the island, it didn't give me enough drive to feel like I was pushing through and being a total bad ass. (Memories of Celceta and Oath of Felghana were both really good in this regard). Also, there were very few human enemies in the game and no real "main" bad guys. They tried to rectify this by having some of the bosses appear multiple times but because they were not "Humanoid" I just didn't get the same vibe. I know that later in the game some of this changes, but yeah it really wasn't enough to make me love the story. Also, the Dana stuff wasn't very strong and the major plot twist that happens later on was fairly easy to see coming.
Of course with all that being said, the island itself had enough character to carry the story through the weak parts. It felt like the most fleshed out world of any Ys game thus far which was a huge deal. Having such a large island that felt like an open world despite the many loading screens just was really nice and having all of the side content which allowed you to journey backwards through the world also made things more multifacited then other previous Ys games.
One of the reasons I really like the Trails games is because Falcon crafts these incredible and detailed worlds (the world of "Cold Steel" puts many other RPG worlds to shame). Ys 8 had a world that was comprable to a Trails game which is part of what made this game so special.
In fact for me Ys games were always games that I _liked_ but not _loved_ and this is to me the first Ys game where I told myself "wow this is good". I had as much fun with it as I had with Persona 5.
Like I said before I think story is subjective so its fine that you loved it and I thought it was Meh compared to the other games. Glad you see what all the fuss is about now.
