Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

I beat this on Vita, ask me anything (and yes, it's amazing)
Title says it all.
If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer.

First, some general FAQ

How long is it?
It took me 54 hours, I did all the side quests, completed most of my journal (missing just one monster entry, and yes, they are back). This is not including retries I think, and I assume if the PC version is based on PS4 version, Falcom promises significant addtional story contents, so it should last longer. So yeah, this is SIGNIFICANTLY longer than previous Ys titles, and I'd say as long as Trails games. It's not as dialogue-heavy though.

Do I have to play older Ys games?
Nope, but it does make some passing references. Very first weapon you use is the last sword you get in Ys V, while Adol makes some references to what happened in Celceta (Ys Memories of Celceta, and NOT any other Ys 4s), but that's about it. A certain someone from Celceta makes a surprising appearance later in the game, but it's not that big of a deal. Also, Adol's BFF Dogi comes back, but really, he's just Dogi and he barely makes any real references to what happened before. Also there is a plot point regarding Altago that's quite significant early on, but you don't really have to know about Ys 7's story to understand this.
In fact, some of the lore the game reveals may confuse the people who are familiar with older Ys titles.

When does this game take place in Ys timeline?
Immediately (a month or so) after Ys V and before Ys VI. This kind of comes into play later, especially the fact that this is before Ys 7 (which is after Ys VI), because they make a certain reference on the status of Altago and Romun Empire at the game's time that relates to the main story. But like I said, if you don't know about it, you wouldn't feel left out either.

Is it weird to have Adol talk?
As someone who turned off voice for both Ys 7 and Memories of Celceta, yes, it's still weird, but because of how things are setup, it's also weird not to have his voice in some cutscenes. You just have to get used to it.

Do you play as Dana (blue-haired girl) a lot?
No and yes. Vita version has it as a more of a mandatory side mission thing, but Falcom is adding more contents to Dana's story in PS4 version. So I don't know how it will end up here.

How does it play? Is it like Ys 7/Memories of Celceta or completely different?
It's an evolution of Ys 7-style. However, Celceta's map-making returns, but whereas Celceta was more akin to Metroidvania-style map-making, Ys 8 goes full-on with open exploring, so it feels more like an open space (but not seamless sadly). Free-camera also gives that feel. But now you can jump, so at times it feels like Ys 6-style games as well. However, those of you who want good dungeons, they toned it down here a lot, so you are ot of luck. Don't expect anything at the level of Memories of Celceta's last dungeon.

How bad are trophies to 100%?
I hope they are not as bad as Origin (beat Boss Rush 8 times on Nightmare) or Felghana (do sidequests on every difficulty).

The only difficulty-related trophy was beat the game on Nightmare. It's probably easy to beat with new game+.
Othe problematic trophies include play as a certain character for certain amount of time (5 hours). Kinda like Memories of Celceta but the game is significantly longer so if you mix up regularly, it won't be hard to get. Another trophy is to get all the skills to max level, and this requires a lot of grinding. There are invincible bee-hives throughout the world, so you can grind on those.

Sounds good to me. Thanks.
I hope this will be a good port... that's the only thing i worry
I've played Ys I, II, (III and IV via downloading from online emulator) VI, Oath in Felghana, and Seven on my PSP.

Will there be returning characters 0.0

I remember after finishing Ys VI I was like "Man, I love Geis! I wish I could've seen more of him". Then I play Ys seven and I laughed with anticipation of seeing him again. After finishing Ys Seven, I wondered if i'd ever get that chance to meet previous characters again.

Well, any returning characters or references? You said this one takes place between V and VI. Does that mean we'll get to have hints of Ernst keeping an eye on Adol? :V (try beating that boss on nightmare lol)

One character from Memories of Celceta (NOT Mask of the Sun or Dawn of Ys) returns. This person is an optional character so it's not like Geis where he played a huge part in stories of both Ys 6 and Ys 7.

Other than that, just Dogi.

As for the references, yes, you actually do get a hint of Ernst spying on Adol from a character who's from Romn. It's a small reference, but welcoming one nonetheless for series fans.

However, if you are looking for more Geis/Ernst references, Memories of Celceta is what you want to play.

Compared to Pre-Ys 7 games, it should be pretty easy. No bosses that f*ck up your mental health like Dark Fact.
Hows the music in this game?

Great.
The general concensus from what I gather is Ys 7 > Ys 8 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Memories of Celceta.

I personally think it's up there with Ys 7 and Oath in Felghana. One thing that really impressed me was that it does the slow, moving pieces really well. Ever since Feena's theme in the first game, I was realy never all that into slow, quiet piano music in Ys games, but Dana's theme and the Main Theme are just.... amazing, not just because it's great music, but how they were used throughout the game. I'm saying this with a bit of hyperbole but I liked it as much as To Zanarkand, though it's more similar to Hisaishi Joe's music.

Hell, just about any music related to Dana is gold, even the non-slow ones.
I've liked what I've heard of Ys VIII's soundtrack. I'm just wondering if they're going to add more tracks to the PS4/Steam version, like they did with Tokyo Xanadu eX+.

That I don't know, but they just might since they are adding story contents.
How dependant is this game on the royal guard thing? I hated having to abuse it to deal good damage to bosses in Ys 7...

I'm not familiar with higher difficulties, so I wouldn't know much about this...
But I'd say some skills in this game are really strong, even without the flash guard attack bonus. And just like MoC, it has flash move, which you can actually chain if you are good enough, meaning you can beat the bosses without giving them any real chance (theoretically).

I've almost never used the guarding in Ys 7...
