Perhaps I Treated You Too Harshly
I used to dislike this game for how it handled factions. I hated how there's only two main factions, with one being blatantly good and the other being blatantly evil, while the moral ambiguity is left to the sub-factions.

HOWEVER, after Avowed stripped away the right to kill NPCs and rob them, which are core aspects of what made Obsidian games so free and fun, I now view this game in a better light.

My play style has always been a strong, combat focused player who kills and loots their way across the land, and often ignores mission objectives. Now that's impossible in Avowed. Obsidian has crossed over to the dark side.

Outer Worlds still allowed me to play the game how I love to, so I cannot fault it too much for having some narrative flaws. Freedom comes first. I might even replay it now.

Freedom of one ends when freedom of the other starts - and vice versa. This "Avowed" sounds interesting.

You mistake Obsidian games for Bethesda. the core aspect of Obsidian games is the narrative.

This. People forget that New Vegas was an outlier, not the norm. And it was over 15 years ago. Which means they've shown us what they're willing and able to make for close to two decades.

While I don't play as a murderhobo, I also gave Outer Worlds another try because of Avowed, but had to quit halfway through. It was decently fun at first but the gameplay soon became boring, with uninteresting loot, simplistic and easy combat, not much worth exploring, and fetch quests with tons of pointless dialogue. It also didn't help that I grew tired of the cheesy retro-futuristic aesthetic and tongue-in-cheek humor of the game. So far, Avowed has been a much better game by far, for me anyway.
