Gameplay is great, too; lots of different weapons and different ways to handle situations. Just gotta watch out for those side-effects on the story line!
You can feel the Obsidian influence though. If nothing else it will make you want to do another New Vegas playthough
As for the Sequel.. We'll see. If it goes the Avowed route , Obsidian will truly be Dead to me.
A player asked a question, someone will write something positive, someone negative. When I choose something, I read reviews and listen to opinions. It is not a panacea and does not insure against negative moments, but it is better than blindly buying something.
Immediately out the gate you are presented with a dark unforgiving universe ruled by money hungry corporations that exploit people even after death.........aaaand then none of it is taken seriously, it becomes one joke after another ten seconds in before your character is even made and never stops for more than ten minutes. Imagine if Claptrap wrote a script for a game, that game would be the outer worlds.
The character creation system is pretty robust, outside of hair for some reason, and the RPG elements of the stat and skill system are fairly enjoyable to work with though overall don't lend themselves well to more than a handful of playthroughs, some perks are VERY powerful and otherones are absolute trash and the 'flaw' system is really interesting but really terrible too - some are 'meh whatever' others are so bad taking them is realy realy stupid. For example one gives you a -1 to all stats when your up high, which pretty much never happens, and permament concussion which just lowers your brainy stats by one is pretty weak too oooooor you can become permanently crippled and move much slower (-30%) pretty much forcing you to take the movement speed perks while losing the ability to dodge completely.
The gameplay is pretty solid and enjoyable early on, though at some point you realise you are collecting the same handful of weapons just with different levels, same essentially for armor/helmets (which you can choose armor, or + to skills). The guns do feel pretty good for the most part, though because enemies have health and armor based on their level, how much armor they have and what kind of damage type you are doing sometimes they can be reaaaaaly bullet spongey while othertimes (upgraded gear with the right damage modifier on) deletes stuff nicely. You can upgrade your weapons for a cost of money (bits) and science skill, which I beat the game first way through with out even bothering with this, there are also 'science' weapons that are the silly guns of the game - iv not really used those cause they sounded dumb to me - such as a shrink ray and a electric booger shooter that makes enemies float helplessly for a few moments.
The actual premise of the main story isn't bad, and the underlying problems hinted at within the planetary system are hit or miss, one being pretty dumb and the other being a little chilling to consider but i'll avoid spoilers.
Overall I would give it a 6/10 maybe? Its a fun play and probably worth it when its on deep sale (or free) but its flaws are the kind you can't really get used to, they grate on you and distract from the overall experience. (Note iv not invested and thus not played any of the DLC, they don't seem appealing to me.)
