playing lawful stupid and immediately attacking all "evil" creatures on sight even if they aren't hostile without hearing what they have to say, means you will miss out on some potential side quests that offer nice rewards. and it will likely cause you to do many companion quests wrong, which then results in losing them later. .
if you are chaotic evil and immediately execute all the artisans as they enter your throne room and offer gifts (the game allows you to do this) or just tell them "you are persona non grata, leave my kingdom immediately!" then you miss out on all the future potential gifts they would be giving you which is a very huge impact as you can sell those gifts for tons of gold which you need to support your kingdom and losing out on that severely cripples your growth and can even cause you to lose the game. as well as missing out on their "masterpiece" items which are very powerful and very useful in the endgame. .
you can do it, from an "RP" standpoint, if you want, but logically, it makes no sense because it's just shooting yourself in the foot,
But that's the thing with RP. I'm not shooting "myself" in the foot, because my personal interests as Radene, the player, don't signify.
It's only one of the ways to play.
how many playthroughs are you gonna want to do? really? the game isn't that much different each time. unless i guess you can play as a melee focused character instead of a ranges focused one?
and i'm regretful to say i think i've seen everything this game has to offer on my first playthrough and really have no interest in playing again or buying the DLC. .
but i do see your point of view and i respect it , even if i don't fully understand it.
i wish there was a perfect game out there that was so good, i would never want to stop playing and just spend the rest of my life only playing that game and nothing else, but don't think that will ever exist, lol
As many as I feel like. Definitely another one at some point. Hey, even "doing all the content" you're going to miss dialog options.
See, to me, that feels too much like work, and I get enough of that at the office, so I end up goofing off in games, more often than not. Sometimes "seriously" roleplaying.
Again, that's just one way to play.
Efficient handling I mostly only do in puzzle games.
you can kill The Board members or work with them.
you can cut power to the first town, or cut the power to the people in the greenhouses.
you can play with the companions or go lone wolf.
so yeah, one could make a legit argument for playing through this a second time, but then again, outside of that. all the enemies are in the same spots, and the main plot basically unfolds the same and i don't know if the ending really changes all that much

and sometimes i do think it feels like "work", lol, like at a major decision point, i do often feel compelled to either save the game first and then reload a few times, trying all the options or i'll just look it up and spoil which option gives the best reward and just pick that one and then i get bored. i want to see everything but i also want to get it done and sometimes those things don't line up

If you've not tried Disco Elysium it's worth a look as it embraces the idea that failure is an option to the extent that unlike your average RPG you don't feel the need to get into a save and reload cycle to make sure your get the right outcome.
i see "overwhelmingly positive" , but then i wasn't sure if it had classic rpg mechanics like xp and leveling up and combat or if it was just all dialogue.
and then , you don't dare ask, because then you get people with their "OH, you're one of THOSE, that doesn't like to read, go back to CoD!" (i don't play CoD and i never will)
or they assume you're just a munchkin who only cares about stats and getting loot.
and yeah, i had my rant about RP in CRPGs earlier. but that was more about how it felt meaningless to me in most CRPGs, and i just want to get through the content. .
but I DO like rich narrative and I DO like RP. I DO when the choices mean something.
I DO like reading, when the reading is broken up with a bit of action here and there. I'm playing a video game, i want " some" interaction. otherwise, i may as well jsut be reaidng a book.
the problem here is because i kind of want to try it, i have done minimum research as to avoid spoilers, so i'm kind of in a catch 22. gonna have to spoil something to find out if the game is truly something i want to play
Possibly not the game for you then.
- Combat first, it happens twice (yep that's right twice) and it's handled by dialogue not mechanics.
- XP/Levelling, XP yes but no real levelling. Even XP doesn't mean you become powerful in the normal sense but just better able to do some tasks.
- Dialogue, there's is lots and lots of it and to get the most out of the game you do need to read it.
A couple of other points to note, it's not an open world game and in fact the 'play' area is pretty small; the main story arc is fairly fixed so it's really about how you navigated through it that counts; you are a detective but it's really about your story.
There's always the two hour refund option as that should be more than enough to see if it's the game for you.
Oh, I played it, but even it is mechanical enough that if you're fishing for specific outcomes (if only to see what you missed the first time) you end up with a spreadsheet.
Has some good ideas, that one, but suffers from the same limitations, since those come with the limited interactivity between player and content designer.

Like I already said, if I complained about the lack of dialogue trees and branching narratives in RAGE (or any Open World Shooter), I would be (rightly) called an idiot. He doesn’t deserve special treatment just because his preferred genre of video games is Open World ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
There are so few video games that even try to offer meaningful Role-Playing experience. Yet busybodies like you still complain about the mere existence of any game that does.

Role-playing doesn’t mean a slavishly legalistic devotion to the in-game alignment chart.
If you’re role-playing as a Boy Scout who does everything by the book. You can still bend or break the rules of your character’s code, it just means role-playing a character who breaks his own rules.
No one say you’re not allowed to role-play as a hypocrite.
In Deus Ex: Human Revolution you could do lethal melee takedowns or non-lethal melee takedowns. Lethal takedowns make more noise and non-lethal takedowns award more xp. So there is zero gameplay reason to ever use the lethal option, and for most of the game I didn’t, because why kill needlessly.
But I remember one segment, where you’re ambushed in a capsule hotel by the same mercs who killed the main character’s waifu at the beginning of the game. Now, I wasn’t gonna be stupid and try to kill all the mercs, but I still made a point of using only lethal takedowns on my way out, even when this meant alerting everyone to my position due to the extra noise. Because if I held the life of one of those mercs in my hands, it made no sense to actively deny yourself revenge.
That’s role-playing. Situational, not legalistic box-ticking.

I don't have any "hate" towards this game. I just don't think it's as good as folks think it is.
I like role playing, but it feels meaningless to me in a game like this. same as in skyrim and FO.
edit : and i never said "you're not allowed to play as a hypocrite". that's basically the character i always play as because i'm always looking for the optimal choice and it often contradicts previous choices i made, leaving my character's personality all over the place.
my argument was that in some CRPG "if you choose" to stay in character, and stay true to the alignment you chose, with no flexibility, then you will run into problems. you will miss out on content. you will anger npcs. you might even cause yourself to lose the game.
i knkw that nobody "HAS" to play that way.
it just baffles me when folks come into games and talk about "immersion" and "playing as a certain personality" of a character that does certain things , when in the end, you're playing the game to complete the game, aren't you?

there's too many unplayed games in my library that i don't need to spend extra time here typing, only to be cyber bullied.
p.s. i do own Deus Ex, and i never got around to playing it. not because i think it's bad, it just happened that way. new games come out, i get distracted, old games get buried. maybe one day, i'll see what the fuss was about that game.
also, i just tried Witcher 1 a few days ago and I do agree with OP, the combat is deeper in this than in that, but you can't compare them necause it's not even the same style of combat. Witcher, you click and the guy attacks and then you wait and see the cursor flame and then click again. the combat in that is more like chains of QTE or a rhythm game, where this is an FPS, they aren't even the same thing

I find it genuinely disturbing that some people refuse to accept that not everyone plays videogames for the same reason they do. I like CRPGs that focus specifically on Role-Playing, you don’t and that’s fine. Your position is not more objectively reasonable than mine, but you’re acting like it is.
Your confusing alignment with character. A character has motivations and aspirations and desires. Nobody aspires to be Lawful Evil, they may very well be, but not because they set out with the intention.
Superman is, I’m sure everyone would agree, Lawfully Good; but that doesn’t mean he’s never going to break the law like in Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, or that he’s never gonna do anything bad like when he Super-stalks Lois Lane in Superman Returns, not to mention all the times he’s gone full Evil (like Injustice).
A great RPG doesn’t unduly punish you for role-playing, but certain choices are going to lock you out of some future ones. The Outer Worlds is a great RPG.
No, I’m playing it to have a good time, I don’t feel any obligation to finish a game if I can’t do it my way. I don’t care about “winning” at videogames.
