Running out of ammo
This is a kind of ironic post for me, because whenever people would post this issue on the Fallout 3/NV/4 boards I would chuckle to myself and think: "how do you manage that with ammo being so plentiful"? And maybe you are chuckling at this post as well now. I don't know, am I doing something wrong or is ammo really more rare in this game?

To be honest, I think the problem isn't not finding enough ammo, I'm finding decent amounts, It's more that it takes so much ammo to kill anything in this game, so maybe I AM doing somwthing wrong. I went to that small crashed spaceship very close to the big one the first quest sends you to and killing the 5-6 large mammals there took more than half the ammo I had at that point.

I am using TTD and headshots, but whereas in FO4 it takes one headshot from stealth or 2-3 out of stealth to kill something, it can take 10-15 shots in this game. Also, I unlocked the stealth skill that unlocks sneak attacks, but whenever I shoot something out of stealth, I do not get a sneak attack notification and don't seem to do extra damage.

I'm still very early in the game and using a normal handgun. I also found an assault rifle that kills things much faster, but I have even less ammo for that. Should I hold off exploring until I get a better weapon? Maybe from the first city you get sent to?

There is literally no reason to kill local wildlife. Youll get nothing from it in 99,9% cases. Level cap on vanilla is doable with ease just by fighting other people. Other species allow for some achievements and money through poaching.
I havent bought a single bullet, just explored a lot and cleaned all bandits - that gave me enough ammunition to start a war. If youre having problems with bullets - save them for those who must be killed. And remember that npcs are territorial. You can easily escape from them, they wont chase you forever. With speed-based perks you can loot&run anything&from everything.

hey kill all the beasties you want, who cares, but this is a simple level issue, snow. there's no walls outside. there's no "you're not ready" signs... when you first get to "your" ship, if you pan sharp left to that shell of a framework with the 3 beasties off in the distance watching but not approaching? G'ahead. Walk on over. Show em your melee skills with your lvl 1 stick! :-) their levels should tell you, hmm, maybe come back when you and your gun/blade/stick/whatever are at least in the same range as them.
A key issue is you can buy ammo. I agree there are parts of the game when you use a lot of ammo against bullet sponge enemy.

Certain of your upgrades double the amount of ammo you can buy from traders and dispensers. Also alternate between weapons that use light ammo, heavy ammo, and energy. If you use the same type every time you'll rapidly run out. Also search every container and corpse. There's a lot of stuff scattered over the map.

Those big beasts have thicker hides, and I found that guns using Light Ammo have a lesser effect on them.

Heavy Ammo is what you want for those Behemoths. The Assault Rifle you picked up is what you want on those guys. Plasma (fire damage basically,) works on flesh bags such as Marauders and (big) beasts, but uses Energy Ammo.

Tips on Robots and Mechanicals; They do not like Electrical damage. Their, "Head Shots" are not exactly heads, since, most do not have one. Instead, look for a glowing blue light on them, and shoot it (I think I read this in one of the loading screen tips.) This is their weak spot.

I've noticed Marauders like hanging around explosive boxes...
Expending one bullet to wipe out a couple hooligans can help once every so often.

Yes, I'm afraid you were playing inefficiently. Using a whole sack of Light Ammo sounds about right on those burly targets.

Is that Assault Rifle the Spacer's Choice brand? You'll find a better one somewhere on that world later.

Edit: The city you get sent to should have sufficient crates and boxes you can loot for ammo.
Even if you're not going there for quests or buying at this time, it is still worth stopping by for the hidden loots laying in back alleys around town.

For the record, I really didn't have any issues with ammo anymore since going to Edgewater. That was really just at the very beginning of the game.
well you are extremely early in the game, you will find ammo is not a problem shortly.
