Items disappearing from ship storage?

I'm on my first playthrough (regular edition), loving the game so far, but I'm just finishing up on The Groundbreaker, and at some point i noticed my light assault rifles were gone from the locker just inside the ship on the right. i had 3 there.
Went back to an older save. i find only 2. went to an even older save, and there are 3.

No, i didn't scrap, sell, or drop them by accident. Yes, I'm sure.
Found a few posts about this happening to people with items in storage, and even equipped items on the PC, including unique gear, but no explanation or solution.
Noticed from random reddit posts that this is an issue in other Obsidian games as well, similarly with no explanation or solution.

I've been hoarding almost everything from the start, until i can figure out what's what, and not sure if anything else disappeared because it's hard to keep track, so i have a ton of items stored on the ship divided between the containers. not sure if it can cause this.

Losing progress due to rolling back after losing great gear really sucks, and i'd like to solve this before is happens again.
Also, is there an actual 100% loss proof container on the ship?

Posting here because there's little to no activity in the bugs & issues section, and i'm hoping to find some players who might have heard or had this issue and can shed some light on this, and how to stop or fix it, because i stopped playing for now.

Have not played the game in quite a while, but when I did, I used the containers in the captains quarters.. and junk every where else... never lost anything. maybe since then, bug's may have entered into the game and/or hackers. Just say'in.

Thanks, will try to move everything to captains' quarters and see, maybe it's marked as 'safe' unlike the lockers.

If it's a bug, it's old and really rare (found just a few posts from 2019-2020 at least), seems weird that almost nobody had it or knows about it.

I knew that most chests in the game are not "protected" I just never tested which ones in my ship were and always used the captain's chest.

Thanks, I'll try using only that one. Maybe it's the only protected one in the game.

Captains chest is the only protected container
