How do I hack a vending machine?

I have a base hack skill of 30 and a modified hack skill of 50 thanks to my companions. This is above the 40 required to buy restricted stock from vending machines. Yet when I use a vending machine, I can't buy the restricted stock nor can I see an option to hack it. What's the deal?

Basically, we can't. We have to have our base skills up to the point where it unlocks the bonus. Companion and armor won't change that.

What the hell is the point of getting those bonuses from companions and armor then if it doesn't do anything? How irritating.

Companion and armor bonuses work for hacking terminals, lock picking, melee damage, etc.

High positive reputation removes the restrictions on sold goods in vending machines. To be honest you don't need to buy anything from them as the majority of sold items can be obtained from merchant NPCs. The exception is the rare mag-to-melt mod as it is only sold in Auntie Cleo vending machines in Roseway. Even then you have other ways to obtain the mod if you have the DLCs installed that increased the engineering skill bonus to 150. This allows you to replace the mag mod, and will refund you the original mag mod that was on the gun.
