Vicar Max is a companion?
The guy attacked me for some reason and he's dead. Oh well. What a dumb game.

You can always go a no companion play through and piss / kill off all the npcs that you can recruit. I think there might be an actual acheivement for that too ;)

All I did was some quest or another and brought him the book he was too much of a coward to get his own self. I guess I should go back to wherever that was and finish killing off the civilians. I guess the answer to the question of "how do I keep from offending the denizens?" is 'genocide'.

Did you get caught stealing or something CONSTANTLY? Did you piss off the town with quests? Also, DID HE ATTACK ON SIGHT? If he didn't, he attacked because he caught you stealing or something. If he did, it's because you pissed off the town so badly that you became Kill On Sight.

Great companion, but not essential to enjoying the game. You will basically miss out on his personal quests,

I'm sure there was a quest involved. I think it was one of the quid pro quo ones to advance the main quest that torqued everyone's jaw. Everyone was shooting at me if I got close, but ignored me if I kept my distance.
I may as well go back and loot the place. If I can remember where it was.
