You get 1% negative reputation if they caught you and you get away with it with either persuade/lie/intimidate.
You can use <bribe> and then you don't get negative reputation, but is it worth it...?
Only other option is <Attack>.

Is the negative rep negated by Charm (or Temperament, whichever affects reputation)? Because I got caught a few times, yet never saw my bad rep increase from it (maybe I missed it, though).

I think if your Charm is high enough, the reputation hit is reduced to a decimal amount, so you'd have to get caught multiple times for it to show up on the meter.

Maybe; but it would maybe be based on your Persuade/Lie/Intimidate! I have 75 Persuade and still get 1% negative reputation, when I use it to get away with steal. And I have Very High Charm and Intelligence which both affect Persuade! And Charm also affects Faction Reputation!

There are some things that are just worth getting caught while stealing, especially if there is no feasible way to really hide behind something or extend your reach any further. I haven't noticed any real issues by having a few percentage points of negative faction reputation if its otherwise high.

(Of course, for fun, I pull out a shovel and attack if it's getting late and decide I don't need to save anyway...)
