And you cannot push crates or smash bottles in The Outer Worlds? Well I’ll definitely pursue a refund on my copy then since Obsidian omitted such crucial gameplay mechanic.
Really glad I tuned in for this most excellent of Steam hot takes.
One thing I will submit to critics is that there could have been a lot more content. But what we got is quite good, so at least the quality is up to par.
I'm just happy to know that Obsidian still knows how to make great RPGs (even if the amount of content is lacking).
Also, I keep seeing people complain about how easy the combat is. I played on hard difficulty as well and there were several instances where I got destroyed by enemies. I played a super soldier type character and there are certain enemies that will melt you if they get too close. I guess nearly everyone played a stealth sniper and just sniped away at enemies from safety.
My boredom prompted me to make multiple different characters (all on hard) to see if anything played particularly entertainingly (spoiler - nothing did).
Stealth sniper is boring since stealth mechanics are incredibly rudimentary, neither being overpoweringly effective or rewardingly difficult, plus the environments are claustrophobic and the guns have no range (seriously, sniper rifle effective range is ~65m). What is overpoweringly effective is peekabooing with TTD with the most powerful rifle you can find, keep one shotting enemies and your TTD gauge never runs out (with the 25% on kill perk).
Heavy gunner is boring because the guns are so deeply unsatisfying, even as they're overpoweringly effective. All machine guns spray all over the place and the shots don't feel powerful, but at the same time only a few hits will kill anything. Being powerful without feeling powerful, one of the primary failings of this game's gunplay.
Melee at least has the advantage of handicapping you severely in that you need to get close, but once you get a few perks that handicap disappears and it becomes as tedious as everything else. The melee weapons are slightly more satisfying to hit things with, but Skyrim's melee combat was honestly better.
It's not a bad game, but it certainly is a "meh" game. I came into it wanting to love it, but now I just find it harder to find any reason to continue playing. I doubt I'll be making multiple playthroughs either.
With that said, it's a good start and I hope they'll add more content in the future.
I admit it wasn´t as great as I thought it would be, but that´s probably because I set the bar to high with expectations given it´s an Obsidian game. And I am not just comparing it to NV but to their whole body of work.
Better than average but not great.
It didn´t wow me, neither the story nor the combat nor the exploration did anything great.
Once the story did start to tie together and get interesting..the game pretty much ended.
Seriously the MOST intriguing storyline in the entire game..is the "big"reveal in the end that isn´t even adressed in THIS GAME!
The combat had hints of being really fun but it WAS to easy even on hard, and no I didn´t snipe from safety, I rushed in , at first mainly with an auto rifle later on I mixed it up with shotguns and plasma rifles. It was somwhat challenging in the beginning and for about 30 mins when I landed on the "bad" landing pad but that was just until I had adjusted, the last mission was decent because the enemies actually did enough damage to me whereas for large portions of the game I could just clear the entire location with time dilation giving me impunity. F.E.A.R also had the mechanic and that game on the hardest diff is another beast entierly..before anyone goes "muuhuuhu don´t use overpowered abilityes theen!"
the story was pretty much exlusively fetch quests in small generic and similar locations with traveling between. There was no part that feelt like an epic trek or the beginning of a great adventure like neverwinter nights 2 escaping the small village and traveling to the big city. There was no interesting lore like pillars of eternity. There where apart from the last mission no really interesting and cool set piece action bits like mass effect (which wasn´t obsidian fair enough but it´s a space shooter . theres plenty of other examples).
There where no memorable villains that you had encounters with and got to face of against after building up to it. This is one of the few rpg´s where I didn´t even think about some of my choices..I just went with "Meh, I´ll gun them down just to complete the quest as fast as possible"
simply because I didn´t care about the faction OR the chars in it.
My fav companion was the robot that didn´t even have a quest as far as I could tell.
The companion quests largely where ..generic and forgetable exept maybe a tiny bit of deepth to the Vicars.
Ellie had funny comments tough so she was ok.
Parvatis quest was terrible and cringy in more ways than one..
I could go into greater detail why I disliked it in a separate thread if anyone wants to discuss it. ( In a mature manner, and no it´s not why you think)
The game was decent..but it feelt like it was made using a template.
Um....no. You are thinking about shooters, not RPG's. In RPG's combat is just another obstacle, like a skill check. In a proper RPG you could completely avoid combat if you so wished to do so, by talking your way through it or finding some alternative route.
Regardless, even if you believe that story is a primary focus of the game, that doesn't explain why the combat and gameplay are mediocre.
It's like Obsidian tried too hard to make a modern Fallout clone and ignored their own developer instincts on what makes a great game.
This an ARPG with detailed dialogue and skill checks. This is not a shooter.
