"We're preparing a lot to ensure that PUBG continues to be beloved for many years to come. As we mentioned in our 2024 development roadmap, we've initiated a project to transition PUBG to the latest game development engine, Unreal Engine 5. This move will allow us to introduce new content, enhance service quality, and expand our communication channels, all with the goal of making the game even more enjoyable. We plan to reveal more details as we progress."
No commitment on dates at all. Even in the Roadmap in March, there was no commitment to deliver it, but "planning to" so who knows when it will actually be done.
They have to rewrite the game for the new engine because a port doesn't work, related to the words of an Unreal Engine coder I spoke to.
What would be a good date for the release?
March 2027 is the 10th anniversary of PUBG and the best time to finish an overhaul.
"we've initiated a project",it means, they started the project this year and 3 years are realistically.
However, PUBG Corp has obviously made heavy modifications to the whole engine; these feature additions have to be completely rewritten for UE5. All materials have to be completely remade, too, which means there's a very good chance none of the existing clothing, vehicle, and weapon skins will be present in the engine update - Valve doing it with CS2 is different as Valve built both engines and designed support for CS materials in CS2.
All this is likely a 5+ year project. Essentially, the entire game has to be remade from scratch inside UE5.
They likely started working on the UE5 version several years ago, I would suspect when it was first made available to developers. They're only talking about it now because they're "getting close," but thinking 3 years for a complete game port of this size is super silly. Also "we've initiated a project" doesn't insinuate how recently they've initiated it.
PUBG Corp has a history of not sharing anything until it's close to release. Even early builds of maps they had players test, like Sanhok during development, was always done near the end of the map development cycle.
I don't think it takes 5 years but only PUBG knows the answer.
We will see.
Maybe but there are many things they can't port.
Maybe not everything but certain plugins PUBG use cause problems.
Either because they are incompatible with UE5 or like @کkﻻ said, the change too much about it.
I asked an Unreal Engine senior coder and he told me they had to rewrite it.
