I do see the potential but there's gotta be something about the Unreal engine that makes it impossible or very difficult. DayZ barely works and manages to be what you describe but probably only due to it's weird, ugly and janky engine. I'd imagine 100 REAL players plus zombies and AI you already got lag, bases on top of that even more lag and issues. The game has rounds that go on for a certain amount of time, maybe to cover up the engine and game not being able to handle long term persistent online server style gameplay. This is all just theory and ideas I'm not a game dev but there's gotta be a reason ten year old DayZ is still on top in terms of open world zombie survival, I would love to be proven wrong by a nice looking good performing open world survival Unreal game with vehicles that actually work.

They revamped the dayz engine late last year and it runs super smooth now but i agree unreal seems to be hard to optimize on large scale maps

i thought the arma 2 dayZ mod was better. less complicated i didnt need a guide to be able to survive in game. people play dayz cause it doesnt really have any competition

There won't be any.
Period.
As a reminder they almost cut out anything about survival in pubg.
