High GPU usage in menu, low GPU usage in game
So my GTX 1080 Ti has a 99% GPU usage in the menu but once I get in game it only uses 40-50% usage. Why is this? THere's no bottleneck, temps are fine, drivers are updated, enough RAM, no game problem since I reinstalled it a few times, I put my PC on optimized performance and no saving energy, no overclock,...

Full specs:
i7 7700k
gtx 1080 Ti (zotac amp extreme core edition)
16 GB ram
MSI z270 Gaming Pro Carbon
500gb SSD
1000 GB HDD

not many games feature really optimized menu as it is not intended to spend many hours in there so usage there is off charts on many occasions.

how much FPS are you getting with such usage in game?

Average of 80, playing in 1080p and nothing's on ultra, everything is on medium or very low, just texture is on high.

This is a common problem in many games, I'm not sure why they can't learn from other companies that have made the same mistake. Until they create a menu fps cap enable VSYNC.

As said above it's a common thing in most games. It does this to me on The Witcher 3 too as it runs the menu screen at 850fps instead of capping it.

Yes but why doesn't the game utulize 100% of my GPU in-game? I could get way better results.
You do actually get a CPU limit in this game, I see it with my i7 6700K + GTX 1080, you can tell it's a CPU bound game because when I OC the CPU I get more FPS, simple.

It's more a poor engine/optimization bottleneck though over hardware.

But it shows on your PC 50% use and 80 FPS not the 144 cap means your CPU can't feed enough frames, only other thing dodgy game or driver installation.

If you up to a higher resolution say 1440P you would see use go up to IDK 80% but still get the same FPS with the same settings highlighting the CPU limit.

stop saying stuff like that like. monitoring with afterburner i see how my cpu is at 60% while my gpu is at 50-60%. its just awful optimization

Try to load your gpu more. Put textures on ultra, AA on ultra, View distance ultra. It gave me +30~ fps, now its around 100fps all the time, and i am even playing on gtx 970, so with your gpu it should be 144 locked.

Well that's what I thought too but even though I put everything on ultra and even resolution scale to 120% I will only get 40 fps then. The game's just badly optimised for now.

I tried it again now and it actually works. My gpu usage is at 99% but the fps isn't 144 though, it's around 100 with everything on ultra.

what settings you playing in ? i believe the lower the setting the less workload for the gpu and more for the cpu, so i imagine your cpu will be running at near 100%
If I put everything on ultra or on very low, CPU usage stays the same.

I'm guessing it's a CPU bottleneck, esp. since your average CPU usage does not change with graphics settings.

OC that CPU and check if you get higher fps. If you do, it's CPU bottleneck.

In menu, where CPU usage is much lower, your graphics card can put out way more fps, leading to higher GPU usage than in a match.

What I don't get is why you would get higher fps with higher graphics settings, unless the higher settings somehow lower cpu requirements. I've read that higher textures require less cpu processing time, since they don't have to be downsampled. Not sure if that is true, but if it is then the higher textures could give more fps if you're CPU limited.
Other than that, maybe the GPU load is so low that it is reducing clock speed.
Could try setting TslGame.exe to "prefer maximum performance" in nVidia control panel. This should keep your graphics card from clocking down due to "being bored". The clock speed will however still be limited by temp limit, power limit and voltage limit.

i think its just optimization, i had this same issue about 8 or so patches back and it didnt affect game play.

havent had it since,

1070, 6600k @4.4, ddr4 2133/16ram, SSD, win10 with msi afterburner

With 7700 and a 1080ti you should be playing on 1440p. 1080 isn't going to use ur hardware to its proper performance

I also have a 7700k 1080ti and 16 gigs of ram on a z270 hero from Asus. I'm at 144 fps on 1440.

Also I wouldn't worry about main menu. They should cap main menu to 60 fps to begin with.

i get 40 70 fps with a gtx 1080
my usage is at 40to 50%
