what do you mean? like how to mess with it?
How does that make any sense? You don't know if his system was updated so why are you assuming some mysterious system update broke it? Are you talking about a game update? A game update wouldn't modify system settings and it would have effected more than 1 guy.
There hasn't been an Nvidia or AMD driver update either so it can't be that. There also haven't been any Realtek updates.
No Windows updates in the last few weeks touched Anything sound related. Software for a headset wouldn't do this either, if it did he wouldn't hear any sound.
The only way a headset could be at fault would be if it was a true multi channel headset and the rear channels plus both the left & right channels got unplugged which would again mean he would also have issues with sound coming from the front and the sides.
OP other than it just not working have you noticed anything else in any other games or is it just this one game?
There's definitely positional audio. I play on an Atmos setup and while the game doesn't support it it does support 5.1 or at the very least pro logic 2 which would allow for 4 discreet channels of positional audio. Based on the engine i believe it's standard 5.1
My receiver says "multi-in" when the game is running and if it wasn't using positional audio it would only say stereo.
It's incredibly helpful and has saved me many times. I put the volume up and even with my eyes closed I can aim exactly where footsteps are coming from.
Headphones are great but I'll take true positional audio any day plus nothing beats 2000 watts of battle audio.
