Terrible surround! Any help?
First of all, I have the steelseries 840 7.1 surround headset. In PUBG i can never hear where people are coming from or shooting from, if a person is close to me it sounds like he is all around me at once and i cant seem to change any settings to fix this.

It's like i only have one speaker, pretty annoying... i freaking panic everytime i hear someone close and i need to spin around like crazy to look for the guy.

Anyone got a clue what might be the problem?

I'm not too familiar with SteelSeries but do they have a software to adjust your headset? If they do make sure surround sound is on.

Yo i got the same headset, but my sound is fine.

Do you have "DOLBY" on?

If you do disable it.

on your dock go audio>dolby>off

Thanks for the quick response, I'll try to turn my Dolby OFF.

Its wierd tho, cause inn all other games it is perfect.

Never mind, it was OFF... I'll try turning it ON.

yeah turn off dolby or other surrond settings directly on headphones. those headphones are "virtual surround" meaning they are still just stereo emulating a surroundish sound, like many similar headsets. my headset is like that and works better with dolby off on this game.

I figured out what my problem is, but not the sollution.

My headset plays sound on all the channels no matter what.
Mr. FineSwine what are your settings?

I figured out the sollution for the Steelseries 840 atleast.

The bluetooth on the headset (or its my laptop ASUS ROG G771JM) turns off sometimes and the it goes into Mono sound instead of Stereo so it plays on all channels at the same time, no wonder i panic when someone is close.

Dock -> Audio -> Dolby OFF
Playback Devices -> Steelseries 840 Stereo

And simply turn off all types of Surround sound on the computer

I have a Logitech Dolby virtual 5.1 gaming headset. In response to the "experts" who insist PUBG works best with a stereo headset, I've tried using stereo, and realized it wasn't providing nearly as much directional information as that simulated virtual audio. When I turn the Dolby virtual 5.1 back on I can again tell where sounds are coming from to a much greater degree than in stereo.

Below is a link to a video showing that PUBG has six discrete audio tracks. So even if Bluehole says PUBG doesn't support surround sound, it seems as if some audio products (including my headset) are able to use those six tracks to come up with something pretty close to surround sound. I don't care what the so-called experts think, I can hear the difference, so much so that other players in my squad are often surprised at how much better I can tell the direction of shots or whatever.

I can't comment on why the OP's headset isn't giving him similar results, hope he gets it figured out.

my logitech surround sound headset is much more accurate at pinpointing sounds than my buddies razor stereo headset. even if its simulated its far superior.

edit: when the audio is actually working properly anyway.

I have a cheap Chinese Edifier w800bt plus headset and I also had this problem. I solved this problem using advice from here:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/sound-goes-mono-as-soon-as-i-start-a-game-or-an/3d1665a3-0127-4c4c-a44e-e04b9fdbd0ca
" you can use another standalone mic (may be on the 3.5MM analog jack or USB one) to communicate with game contacts & use the headset for sound out only. Disable the headset Microphone in sound settings by searching & running command mmsys.cpl
The quality of the mic inside is not inferior but having both in best condition (stereo+Microphone) is not possible yet.
If you want the feature (good quality audio out in stereo+ Microphone working simultaneously) then you may have to purchase a new one with own proprietary wireless adapter."
I turned off the microphone and everything worked
