Do we have a source on PUBG now outputting 6 channel audio? Here is a developer saying that the game does not have 6 channel output (5.1 surround). When a developer says a game doesn't have something I am inclined to believe them.

What is wrong with "fake" surround? Virtual surround is the superior way to have surround sound when it comes to headsets. A real surround sound headset literally has multiple speakers crammed into the cup. The vast majority of people will not be able to tell which speaker is outputting what sound when they are all pressed against your ear.
I can tell you there is nothing over hyped about 7.1 virtual surround on a headset as it really does make a big difference. My software has a comparison built in and hearing stereo compared to 7.1 virtual right after the other is impressive. You can easily tell if a sound is behind or in front once you are in tune with how the software processes the different input channels.
They say it doesn't output 5.1 but anyone can test it for themselves and they will see it outputs 6 distinct and accurate audio channels on a 5.1 / 7.1 audio device. The game uses the Wwise sound engine and as far as I know, any game that uses a non-ancient version of Wwise will have surround sound.
There is certainly a lot of confusion because of Bluehole's official statements contradict what we observe. My guess is that some miscommunication occured between a Korean dev and the English PR guys and it keeps getting repeated because the company is somewhat of a mess
ive seen that video, still doesnt change the fact i can hear perfectly fine and know if someone is coming from my left or right and behind or in front of me, i can also tell above and below.
If you're near cover, first you'll hear the "crack" of the shot, then the "boom" of the shot. The "boom" gives away the shooters position. The best give away is seeing the bullet holes in your cover. Its obvious how they got there right?
In short, you see bullet holes hit the tree youre behind...TURN AROUND.
Yeah, you still can tell the general direction of a sound in stereo. Surround sound just gives more precise info. Front and back in stereo are as accurate as in surround sound but left and right aren't. If someone is running towards you at your 80, it will sound exactly the same if they approach you from your 120. Both sounds will only use the right speaker. With surround sound, you can tell the difference.
Now, this really isn't a big advantage in most cases. When someone hears a sound coming from left or right, they will turn to face that direction, the sound will now be coming from the front, which is accurate in stereo, and at that point, they are relying on their vision more than their hearing anyway. Someone using surround sound will do the same exact thing and being able to tell if a sound came from 80 or 90 probably isn't going to change anything. But surround sound is superior and is good for certain situations like finding someone hiding in a house.
You don't need a 7.1 headset for 7.1 virtual surround sound. Those headsets just have the software built-in.
If you're having problems hearing what direction audio is coming from I would recommend trying the software called Spatial Sound Card. Check it out here (it's also available on Steam but that version has a ton of issues): https://spatialsoundcard.com/
The free version only has one audio profile out of six different ones in the full version... The one you get for free is sadly not the best but still 100x better than not having any virtual surround at all. Just make sure to disable any other virtual surround/audio EQ/etc. while using it.
Having proper virtual surround makes it so much easier to hear from where stuff is coming. With a half-decent headphones you should be able to pinpoint the direction down to 20-30 degrees instantly.
where sounds follow your mouse/camera movement and or appear reversed
vehicles are especially hard to figure out a vehicle can be 15 feet away from me and I have no idea where the engine noise is originating from
Seems to be a bug with certain OS / soundcards
mine for example windows 7 64 and asus xonar dx , I get the same sound bug it's not all the time but happens now and then
save yourself the hassle and just quit out the sound bug will drive you mad
nothing you can do and doesn't look like they're remotely bothered about fixing it
You wouldn't say that if you heard 7.1 dolby headphone on good headphones
not gimmicky surround headphones proper headphones like sennheiser hd650's
I can debunk the surround myth anyway as the sound bug happens to me in stereo mode too sounds get reversed and or can follow camera movements it's an OS/Hardware/Driver issue
i have ONLY had sound problems once at a PC cafe two years ago when my personal computer at home broke
the difference was that i use "regular" headphones like sony or beyerdynamics and i have never had any sound problems
ever
the headset at the a PC cafe was a shiny "gamer" headset and i think a lot of those are poorly made and sold just for the name brand
