CS:GO has surround sound with 6 channels. CS:Go will give allow you to have different sounds for the front channel, left front channel closer to front, right front channel closer to front, left back channel closer to left, right back channel closer to right, and a combination of those to give you a more accurate sound direction. A sound from behind is formed using the 2 back channels instead of the 3 front channels, which allows surround sound headsets to give you a distinct sound that is different from a sound from the front.
P.S. PUBG Mobile has 7.1 surround sound with 8 channels!
I think you were referring to my typo. Yeah a shot from behind can be mistaken for a shot from your front, not from the right. Having to turn in directions to get a good idea of the sound direction is a problem since the attacker can do a lot of damage while you are trying to get a direction. It is a good way to do it if you can't figure it out with the bullet whiz, but it is something they should change in PUBG.
Like I said there are clues that your brain can use to get the direction, but there literally is only a left and right channel. There is a big difference between 7.1 surround and stereo, so you can't pull perfect sound out of this game with any headset. Even a surround headset needs the game to support it or else there is just the stereo 2 channel.
Edit: For example imagine you are coming off a hill and looking forward at an empty field. You hear a shot that plays from the left and right channel telling you it is either from the front or the back. You can see in front of you, so your brain automatically tells you it is from behind. Our brains really help fill in the blanks that the game leaves behind and the bullet whiz helps a lot due to moving from side to side.
Turning around during the sound of first shot is the best way to save your life. And if the shooter behind you it is the half of the way, if in front, anyway when your position has been compromised the best way to survive it is moving to cover, the chance that you will win this fight less then you just run away to the cover.
This video explains all the technicals.

i hear all sounds just fine with a stereo headset, i dont need fake over hyped surround.
In most games, stereo is fine. But in PUBG, any sounds coming within 60 degrees to the direct left or right will sound the same, meaning you can only pinpoint those sounds within 60 degrees of accuracy, which is a huge range. You need 7.1 VSS to be able to pinpoint the sounds coming from those left and right regions as well as you can from the other regions. Watch the video.
