What kind of sound does PUBG output? 2-channel? 5.1? 7.1?

I have a Sound Blaster Z with virtual surround sound so I'm trying to ascertain the best settings for this game. So far, I haven't seen any audio output options like this in the game nor have I come across any information for what the game outputs.

Normally, I would choose 5.1 or 7.1 in-game and then let my sound card encode HRTF via it's own proprietary virtual surround sound software so that I could get directional cues with a pair of headphones. However, if the game isn't providing these separate channels (or doing its own HRTF) then this won't work.

If the game does its own HRTF, then I would want to disable my virtual surround sound. In the upcoming patch notes, it mentions that you can now determine which floor a player is on by listening to their footsteps. To me, this would imply that they have implemented their own HRTF. So what is the case?
