The game has recently been acquired by the publisher Modus Games. That being said development will actually likely be accelerated.
As a side note if you would like to play together I can direct you toward people you may enjoy playing against or we can practice together.
The amount of exposure you've had to "furry" things in general will garner different opinions though. I've had people who've never seen TFH and barely seen MLP look at my screen and ask, "is that My Little Pony??" and to me they don't look similar at all.
So if you can handle talking animals on your screen, then no; there's nothing to worry about.
P.S. if you check my profile, you'll see that for a long time I was playing as Diamond Tiara xD. And I convinced my bro to be Silver Spoon. And together we sucked at DOTA 2 -- oh, great times, great times.
Everyone I've met in this community has been super nice. I wish I could say that about some of my other favorite games.
As others said, I would be worried if there is even really anyone playing. Though that being said, the new update and eventual arrival to Console will boost player count higher, so I'd get practicing in Training Mode and Online Pixel Lobbies while you can.
Reminds me of in middle school where people would be terrified of touching other boys on the arm, lest someone call them gay.
I'm far from a furry and the community is very friendly and even wholesome at times.
But that's just my experience, yours may vary.
