"Hey, my controller isn't working!" - Troubleshooting Guide
Right from the start: If you have vJoy installed, disable the vJoy devices in Device Manager. That's always the first problem people run into, despite it being mentioned in the first part of this guide.

Hey there, I'm Cam, QA and Community Manager for Mane6, and if there's one thing I see cropping up more and more, it's people having issues with their controllers. Luckily enough, there's a few pretty easy ways to get things sorted out, so I'm putting together this list to help get the word out.

Step 1: Make sure that you don't have any third party controller drivers or programs running. This includes (but is not limited to) things like: Vjoy, InputMapper, DS4Windows, DS4Tool, x360ce, SCPToolkit

These third party programs and drivers can cause double inputs, or cause the game to think there are two different controllers present. Both of these issues can make a controller seem completely unresponsive.

Step 2: Check to see if you have any of the Steam General Controller Settings active. Most notably, any of the Configuration Support options. Much like the controller programs and drivers above, Steam's configuration support can also cause things to become recognized as multiple controllers.

Step 3: If you're using an X-Input controller (An Xbox 360 controller, or anything with an Xbox mode, something Windows sees as an Xbox controller), slight nudges on the cable may cause it to disconnect and reconnect in quick succession.

Normally this isn't an issue, but it can happen due to the fact that X-Input devices get assigned a particular controller slot when connected. On Xbox 360 controllers, around the Guide button, you'll notice they have a light showing which controller slot they are assigned to. This player assignment actually happens in Windows as well, and it can pretty easily make it so that your controller, which WAS working fine earlier, no longer work as it was

If this does happen, unfortunately the only way to fix this is to restart the whole dang computer. I personally recommend unplugging the controller before you restart, and then plugging it back in once you are booted back to windows.

Hopefully these steps can help resolve any and all issues that you might run into!

Known controllers with issues:

PS4 Mini Wired Gamepad by HORI - These are known to show up in windows as two different controllers even when plugged in. Not recommended for use with TFH, may have to be used through a converter if at all possible.

Razer Atrox Fightstick - Razer's Xbox One stick does not come natively supported by windows (Shoutouts to microsoft) however there IS a third party driver that you can use to make it function both in windows in general, as well as with TFH. Just need a bit of googling.

I wanted to comment: if you don't have a currently compatible controller, you can use these 3rd party programs (to my knowledge) just fine, as I use a GameCube controller via an adaptor and the x360ce emulator to great success. You might need to backup any files before and after you install the program and setup your controls, as an update could reset everything within the folder.

The problem with this is that if we ever DO end up natively supporting it, a third party controller program will start causing the double inputs I've mentioned before.

done all the things listed here, but the game seems to be switching the X and O, as well as the △ and ☐ buttons on my ps4-type fightstick. it will probably be fine once I remap stuff in the settings menu, but it is a real annoyance that when I map something to X or ☐ it shows up as △ and O, and vice versa.
EDIT: it seems to be only happening with my fightstick, as the regular dualshock 4 controller works completely as intended. I also noticed that my fightstick is being registered as two controllers instead of one, despite me not using third party controller drivers.
I'm using a Razer Panthera EVO stick.
It seems to only get recognized as a single controller though if i plug in both the stick and a dualshock before playing, setting them as p1 and p2, then going back into controllers and only setting the stick to controller 1. if I only have the stick plugged in at the start, or it's the first controller that presses a button in the menu, then it will register as both p1 and p2 for some reason.

I've actually encountered the same issue with reversed X and O / △ and ☐
I'm also using Razer Panthera EVO with no third party drivers installed. Any ideas how it could be fixed? Remapping buttons feels really awkward solution :(

This might specifically be due to what we use for controller recognition, specifically what decides which buttons are which. It's not something we maintain ourselves, and it may not be updated with stuff for the Panthera Evo yet. I can take a look and see what's up there.

Edit: Okay yeah, just checked and the Evo isn't listed. Hopefully we can contact people and get it added to the list, shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks for the response, I hope it's gonna be fixed soon :)

I'm another with the Panthera EVO! Please let us know when fixed!
I had to uninstall VJoy drivers entirely to make my controller player 1

Yes, that's why things like Vjoy are listed immediately in the guide. Third party controller software is a nightmare to deal with. Since Vjoy just installs controller drivers and doesn't need to do anything else, it's the most common issue.

Hi. Will there be analog stick sensitivity adjustment options planned to be added in the future?

I really doubt it? There's nothing in a 2D fighter that requires sensitivity to be changed since it's just 8 directions and a neutral position.

If you're wanting to set up your analog stick sensitivity I recommend this guide here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1349820952

Tangentially related:
I am forced to pick keyboard as p1 inputs - there are brackets surrounding p1 with the keyboard and the initial controller select does not let me choose anything besides keyboard, wich is also true if you pick it and then try reassigning from the option menu.
Everything works fine with my stick, I just can't seem to be player 1.

for anyone having the same issues: it's not related to tfh, but the general controller ordering of your system. go check connected devices and see if anything has made a composite input device off your keyboard and set the preferred gamepad to the pad you'll be using.

Yes, that's where the first part of the guide comes in, disabling third party software that may be interfering and forcing you off of the slot for controller that you need.

Is there an explanation for why step 2 is an issue?
