Poor Performance on High-End System
Hello everyone, how's performance for you? My system can't seem to hold a steady 60fps no matter the settings/resolution. Volumetric fog, draw distance and number of characters on screen affect performance the most. Both GPU/CPU usage are fairly low, so it's not like I don't have the horsepower to run it at 60fps. Thanks in advance for your input! =)

1080ti @ 2,038Mhz w/ latest drivers
i7 5820K @ 4.3Ghz
32GB DDR4 3,200Mhz
SSD
Windows 10 x64 Creators Update

EDIT: Setting the GPU/CPU to maximum performance has NO effect for those of us having performance problems on more than capable systems. Thank you!

It's definitely no trivial matter. What I know for a fact now that I've put together a new build (just this morning) with a 7700K at the helm, is that having fast enough single-core performance will allow for 60fps at all times, and you won't even know there's a problem with the game. The 7700K @ 4.5Ghz is what, 20-25% faster per core than my older 5820K @ 4.3Ghz? I reckon it's something like that.

Anyhow, I'm guessing we're dealing with a case of poor multi-threading on some system configurations. And that's probably why playing a background video or running OBS may fix it for a while since it forces Windows to shuffle around CPU tasks, which obviously influences how the game utilizes CPU threads. Now, does the root cause have something to do with Nvidia drivers, Pascal in particular? Who knows at this point.

EDIT: Those having issues can try the following fixes for the time being. Running the game via Steam Big Picture mode may also prove useful for some users.

try turning v sync to fast in the nvidia control panel , it fixed it for me with a gtx1080ti and ryzen 1800x, i am getting a soild 60 fps 4k and everything max and i am not noticing any screen tearing

For people with low GPU usage, try to open Firefox or Chrome or even the Steam overlay and start a youtube video then pause it. Go back into the game. It should make GPU usage high again with locked 60fps.

Ok... So ... Global Illumination is VERY taxing. I just bumped it down to medium and got a pretty significant bump at 4K. I still had frame rate fluctuation, but just turning on OBS and leaving it running in the background in the "preview" mode locked my frame rate to 60FPS.

You don't have to have OBS capturing or streaming the game. You just need to have it up on the preview screen. It's crazy.

So:
Set Global Illumination to Medium or Low
Run OBS and have it previewing the game.

I'm locked at 4K@60FPS now.

Volumetric fog is also very demanding. Whenever enemy attacks kick up a lot of dust FPS will dip.

Another thing, after updating to the newest NVIDIA driver the game performs better.

Also, if you run OBS before starting the game, the game will just show up as a black screen. I had this happen to me 3 times already. Start the game first then run OBS.

Same problem for me with a gtx 980m, GPU usage around 60-70%

Lowest I've tried is 1080p. Resolution doesn't affect performance at all in my case.

When i run the game maxed out or low @ 1080p, my FPS dont go to 60 ( 45-55 ) in gameplay and my GPU is only used at 60-70%. I own a gtx 980m 4GO, i7 and 16go of ram, my pc is an asus rog g751jy.
And yes i run the game on my gpu, running game on cpu is disable on this pc.

Same issue, im having massive lag. I played Heroes 1 max settings no issues what so ever, so I tryed the same high setting set-up and could barely play at all, with such a low frame rate. I changed to windowed version low settings, same problem. I have a AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor 8gigs ram 2gpu and ive never had any problems with lag on any game. Has to be something wrong here because its incredible slow

Thanks, so it's not an Intel + Nvidia thing. The game is probably bugged in some way.

Wierd that you are having poor performance with that setup.
I haven't noticed any fps drops at 1080p stretched to 2560x1080 (since no uw support)

6700k@4.5
32Gb ram @ 3200
R9 Fury
SSD
win 10 pro thingy

Your 6700K @ 4.5Ghz might be bridging the gap for you. ;-)
Wyvarin Apr 25, 2017 @ 11:10am
I have no idea if this will help, BUT for some reason that I CANNOT explain when I dropped my fps max from 60 to 20 everything was running fast paced.
(fyi I also have 6700k@4.5, along with 32GB ram so I don't understand why I'm having this problem.)

Do you have MSI Afterburner to show your Vram and GPU clocks when running the game? I know I have some issues with KT games in the past where they can trigger power saving states.

One setting I suggest to try is to create a game profile in the nvidia control panel for this game then set "Power Management Mode" to "Prefer Maximum Performance".

Also lagging terribly. Sigh I was thinking of not getting this game but decided to try it and now this. Might as well try and get refund.
kaziyo88 Apr 25, 2017 @ 11:17am
They really need to patch this already, hard to enjoy the game with the lag on high performance PC's. :/
Ringo Apr 25, 2017 @ 11:18am
Gtx 980 might be on the previous driver
i5 4690k
16gb ddr3
Win10 pro no creator update
Ssd install
1080p

Only played a little bit zero issues with everything maxed. Edit: don't run fps monitor but seemed stable 60.
