I actually refunded this game launch week because it was missing the skirmish mode, or so I thought.
Honestly seems like they were trying for an E-Sports vibe, though I think people would've preferred the progressive Skirmish mode. Only reason I have the game is I got it in a bundle with other stuff I wanted (I think) I don't believe i've even tried it more than once since the second aquisition.
The skirmish mode would put my hours into the 100's but alas.
I'm talking about the Skirmish mode from BFGA1, the best part of that game and the only way to play most of the factions in singleplayer.
BFGA2 does not have a Skirmish mode.
Seriously, go try it, it was the best part of the game.
Basically, it was a progressive series of battles in which you built, levelled up and upgraded your own custom fleet, and you could do so as any of the six factions in the game, rather than the boring, one-faction campaign.
After trying the campaign once, and not enjoying it, and being a strict "a full price game must stand up on its single-player alone because multiplayer will always have factors outside of the game's control"-type, Skirmish Mode was BFGA1's saving grace, and the one thing that justified buying in the first place for me.
BFGA2's campaigns are much better than BFGA1's, but there's still not a whole lot of replayability, which for someone with my values makes BFGA2 terrible value for money.
A return of BFGA1's Skirmish Mode with all of BFGA2's factions would have made it amazing value for money (and was indeed the very reason that I bought the game in the first place, only to be sorely disappointed).
If it were, we'd be able to play Tau, Eldar, Orks, etc, IN the campaign.
Instead we're stuck with the same old Imperium-centric main campaign, two tacked-on campaigns for the source material's two least interesting factions, and the surprisingly good Chaos DLC campaign.
If they'd released a "neutral" campaign that you could play with any faction and with the story and time pressure stripped out, people wouldn't be complaining.
THAT would be a suitable substitute for Skirmish Mode.
There's complaining because a lot of people, in order to play their favourite factions, have to either well around in the meaningless custom battles or play PvP, and it sure seems like a lot of people despise the PvP, so that's 0 for 2 on being able to play your preferred faction in any meaningful way.
And it's not helped by the wait times. Last time I actually tried playing the PvP (last week) the wait times were in excess of 30 minutes. A 30 minute wait, then a 5 minute battle, then back to a 30 minute wait.
Why?
Well, I don't know whether it's the matchmaking or whether the servers are just ghost towns, but it's not good.
BFGA1 has more active servers for PvP, so I'll let that speak for itself.
If they'd released. Not if the release.
I'm well aware that this game is abandonware.
What do you mean a normal campaign? You mean that would make you happy? lol
I used to play BFG solely for the pvp and the wait times got so bad you would wait an hour so yeah that sucks and people stopped playing all together. It's a niche game audience to begin with and the mistakes made with the game pushed other players away.
Ah, I see where you were going with that. Yeah, BFGA1's campaign sucked. I do agree that BFGA2's campaigns are all better than BFGA1's.
Right, you get it. They decided to focus on a fickle niche of an already niche playerbase.
What I mean by a "neutral" campaign is:
- Take the campaign map from BFGA2's campaigns.
- Perhaps add in some extra sectors.
- Give each faction a small foothold in lore-friendly sectors.
- Fill the remaining systems with AI factions e.g. Imperial Secessionists, Chaos Warbands, etc.
- Allow the player to play as any faction.
- Example win conditions: global conquest, hold certain sectors for X turns, etc.
That way, people could play their favoured factions in a meaningful way with actual progression.
It would combine the best aspects of both BFGA1's Skirmish Mode and BFGA2's campaigns.
But we'll never get that, since the game has been abandoned.
