I had to give up playing a campaign, every battle had an approximately 50% chance of crash to desktop a few minutes in. I submitted every crash report, but there's been nothing but silence from the developers. I ultimately just uninstalled.

Crashing that quickly no matter what almost sounds like an anti virus block thing. Maybe go into anti virus settings and make an exception. Beyond that I have no idea, but it sounds similar to an issue i've had with other games in the past.
For people that could get it to work prior: Try the beta version (this is effectivly the older version) of the game. Also disable the EAC by using the " -NoEAC " launch option line.

No I mean to tell you that for some reason your setup is causing the game to crash, which could be for a number of reasons, for which there are some solutions to try out. Its all up to you if you want to try these solutions or not.

The Beta version available is one that I helped Focus make and which is more stable for some people. Its also a must if you want to play modded coop games.

I have no mods installed, single player, erased saved games and started a fresh game. Might add the game has no workshop..

Possible solutions are still the same. Use the "-NoEAC" launch option line, and/or try the Beta version. Verifying game files is also a given before anything else is tried. The game has never had a workshop. You find mods for it on moddb or Nexus instead.
game is saving you the disappointment

The reason my game crashed was a bug in Openssl with 10th and 11th Gen inten Cpus.
The fix is explained in this link

Yes to previous post about an OpenSSL issue. This was the fix for me

Step 1. Open "Control Panel" by searching for it in Windows search bar, by pressing the Windows button or key.
Step 2. Go to "System & Security"
Step 3. Go to "System"
Step 3. Press "Advanced system settings"
Step 4. Press "Environmental Variables"
Step 5. Create a new "System Variable" (NOT USER VARIABLE)
Step 6. Enter the following into the Variable name box: OPENSSL_ia32cap
Step 7. Enter the following into the Variable value box: ~0x20000000
Step 8. Now press OK.
Step 9. Restart

Search function is your friend. Alternatively opening your eyes, because a fix to this is currently on the first forum page.

Game crashes on all new computers and is abandoned by team that made it. I am necroing old posts so people see that before wasting money on expansions that will be unplayable unless you are willing to modify your global open ssl settings and hope it doesnt effect all your other programs.

Steam btw is denying all refund requests on the Chaos expansion that will not work, citing that the base game is over the 2 week period, so remember that when thinking about buying steam titles in the future. If you dont go to the forum and read through pages and pages of posts, you could very well be wasting money on something that wont work and getting denied a refund for a broken and unplayable game.

That modification that allows you to play, is it recommended to remove it after finishing the game? I ask if it can cause problems with more modern games.

In the guide posted by Juuken there is a command line that you can write in the launch options. It would work only for the game.
