Ultimately in campaign you can use anything or test anything (you can also do so in skirmish mode) since the AI isnt that complicated you can theoretically win with any ships
Apocalypse. Besides the 6 lance batteries and the 2 Macro cannon turret that can fire to the side, it has a special ability (Overloaded Lances) that when you use Lock On, it turns the gun range insanely long so you can pound the enemy from far, far away. The Retribution does not have any bonuses for its weapons. The spur and torpedoes makes it clear that the Retribution is more a close in brawler/ramming ship than a gun platform though it does make a decent one.
Just to point out though, the insane range and accuracy won't mean much if you don't have eyes to spot the enemy at that range so while a full gunline of Apocalypses is nice, you'll need some eyes like fighters, angur probes or as a last resort, an Oberon's sensors (you lose almost 9,000 range using ship only sensors) to use that gun range.
The Oberon is a good ship if you use it in the role it was designed for. It's a "scout battleship" with the best sensors of ALL the ships not just battleships or cruisers, matched only by the Widowmaker destroyer and carry 2 fighter wings you're supposed to use to scout with. You use them to "see" what you're shooting at.
Edit: I forgot the Emperor also has the same sensors, but with 4 launch bays, you might not want to go that heavy into strike craft since you want a gun focus.
