additionally you can make almost anything work against the AI so you wont have to set up specific ship combinations or anything like that
1. Starcraft 2 - for *FREE* on Battle.net (don't like to play online, because it relies too much on actions per minute for competitive, just comp stomps and campaign)
2. AOE 2 - Simple and fun. I prefer Age of Mythology because of unity variety.
3. DOW 1 Soulstorm or Dark Crusade - If you like Warhammer games, units dealing the last killing blow and to play skirmish.
4. Warcraft 3 - Classic: One of the best rts games ever. DO NOT BUY REFORGED
5. Homeworld Remastered - for one of the best campaigns and space ships battles - Not beginner friendly, 3D space makes everything difficult to maneuver and made everything strange.
(bonus: HW: Deserts of Kharak, beautiful game and with a very good campaign too. It is much more beginner friendly, but with a bad AI for skirmish)
6. Sins of Solar Empire Rebellion - A little bit of RTS with 4X elements. Simple and fun to play against AI. Space battles are simple, but fun. Mods.
7. Company of Heroes 1 or 2 - Bad AI for skirmish, but fun comp stomp skirmsh gameplay. Ardennes Assault campaign is very good.
8. Ashes of Singularity Escalation - A simpler supreme commander, with good AI (compared to all the other rts that i've played). I didn't played supreme commander but everybody says it is good :)
Some games I played before I've downloaded Steam. I had the "pirated version" for homeworld, DoW, AOE2 and CoH1. Because I couldn't find these games on my country and I didn't had money for them.
I've played DOW3 for 90h - Played it online mostly, for comp stomps, but I don't recommend it. Relic/SEGA abandoned it. I think they needed to aim more for the DoW1 or Warcraft 3 gameplay style.
Bonus:
Spellforce 3 Versus - For free too
Tooth and Tail - Simple and fun rts to play on split screen
Total War Shogun 2 - Fun strategy game and the best TW
This.
Normally I try to avoid making statements like the above, but in this case, that sums it up.
You'd have to be incredibly lucky to be able to play this without crashing constantly. Not to mention that the combat isn't all that engaging to be honest. I do like the style, but its kind of 'meh', even on a good day when compared to literally any other RTS combat style.
I honestly can't come up with a reason why I would want to buy this game knowing what I know now. I only hop on it every so often in the hopes that they've fixed at least 1 or 2 out of the hundreds of different crashes/bugs that plague this game.
The answer is always no.
... or you can play modded and control ten times that. ;)
Yes if you absolutely have to play it your mods are an absolute must! Thanks for making the Campaign bearable.
Generally for a beginner this is not it. It is not a classic RTS, but more of a specialist thing, and will likely only work out for you if you are into spaceships and Warhammer 40k in general.
With regards to spaceship, and if you absolutely want to play a spaceship battle game, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is worth a look IMHO.
I have played supreme commander and consider it a great RTS game. Supreme Commander 2 sadly was a bit lacking, but still bearable, it just lacked all of the depth of the first installation.
