The worst thing about this game is...
... that nobody in their right mind would build space ships that looked like flipping cathedrals, with loads of intricate decoration like this. It is just too daft to get past. It is what puts me off the game. If I cant get immersed in a game as being fairly believable then it just is not going to work for me lol.

The game uses the designs from the lore.

Welp, the game's aesthetics are spot-on for the Warhammer 40.000 lore. Sorry if it's not your cup of tea, it may be the worst thing for you but it's basically the best thing for us 40k aficionados.
*shrugs*

then you must hate almost everything in 40k because its all ridiculously designed and always has been. The only stuff that seems to be reasonably designed overall is tau stuff. The only way you wouldnt be aware of this is if youre new to 40k in general, which if you are and you dont like how it looks then you might as well check out.

I mean this game has giant space bugs and demons along with ancient death skeletons that are soulless, besides the imperium is full of religious freaks why would you deny them their flying cathedrals

ikr, seems descriminatory. if imperials arent allowed to have flying churches then orks shouldnt be allowed to have red flashy bits and chaos cant have chains and tentacles

That's the 40k aesthetic! The Imperium of Man is many things, but "efficient" and "sensible" they are not. The point of the ships is they are quasi-religious icons to the people who build & crew them, just like most IoM tech is. It's the same relationship Catholics have to impractical hats

obvious troll...aside from that, there are plenty of examples where things of war were decoraded with symboles of faith

Possibly one of the dumbest things I've read in a while. Thanks OP :)

Lol, ships aesthetics is best thing going for this game.

If you don't like the models in this game you are completely wrong in 40K universe :steamfacepalm:.........

Lore reason, there was a period of the Imperium called the "Age of Apostasy" and revolves around the schism and eventual civil war within the entirety of the Imperium; where Ecclesiarchy, the ruler of the Imperial Cult, ran rampant with power.

This age fundamentally ruined the Imperium to what is today; maybe even more damaging than the Horus Heresy. This period was marked with two things; rampant religious fanaticism for both for the Ecclesiarchy and against; and the increasing obscurity and loss of technology where things like battleships became sacrosanct. This is reflected by their gothic architecture that was built on top of these ships.

Side note; a lot of people in power like nobles found religion, because in this period the threat of burning at the stake by the lower classes was very real. This age affected both beggar and planetary-governor alike. And even Space Marines initiates carry this religious inclination as they became full-fledge space marines.

TLDR to OP "nobody in their right mind would build space ships that looked like flipping cathedrals"

Well... they technically were not in their right minds. It was basically an age of senseless fear and fanatical bloodshed that affected the very zeitgeist of the Imperium of Man. Religion became increasingly important, if not the most important, for the average citizen and "people in power," like wealthy noble fiefdoms and the even wealthier archbishops of the Imperial Cult, sponsored several major religious projects like the retrofits for these ships so they appeared deeply religious..

You are ordered to come to the nearest re-education centre, since apparently the mortal wounding of our Immortal God Emperor is a lesser event to you than some official being a bit power hungry

Even Royal Navy warships during the age of sail had purely decorative/ornamental features. After naval action they would spend time/wood repairing their elegant figurehead (the sculpted wooden figure on the front of the ship) if it was marred by shot, even though it was completely ornamental. And did you see those bright red uniforms? Turns out that yeah, actually, people sometimes do in fact do illogical things when it comes to warfare.

Also, in this setting faith in their god is not just a silly superstition and there actually are demons and ♥♥♥♥ that want to eat people's souls. So spending time/resources on things that bolsters the spirits of the men and women serving on the ship is actually pretty important.

it is better to spend a little time on some metalwork than having to destroy a ship which crew decided that they don't want to get slaughtered by demons
