Renown farming
Is there any reliable way to farm renown in campaign, or can I progress, so to speak, naturally along with the story?

Just progress naturally. The game gets very grindy anyway, no need to add to the grind.

If you are really deadset then you can just sit and wait for sector invasions to fight off. You can get significantly more renown for fighting at a point disadvantage. If you can fight off a 3000 stack with like a single fleet (or several small fleets) you can make a fair chunk.
