How does gaining rank in MP work?

I am a new player, the only faction I seem to be able to win any matches with is Chaos. I have won less then a dozen, but I just checked my rank and I am "Adamantium" with Chaos (which is underneath Legendary & Epic).

I am pretty much trash at the game, how have I gained so much rank?

I did unlock all of the Chaos upgrades via "Skirmish vs AI" prior to playing MP, but I didn't think that would inflate my MP rank. Am I wrong?

You have level for unlocks, this can be gained by earning xp through skirmish. And then you have Ranked PvP that unlocks additional portratis if you rise in rank. So either you did play a lot more ranked matches or you did find a bug.

i really wouldn't pay any attention to the ranks tbh. it's always meaningless

I have the feeling rank changes rather randomly, i was legendary necrons, then Bronze, then adamantium, back to silver, Gold after a match and so on.... it really changes wildly for me
