I´m swimming in resources, and I did find the first part enjoyable, as the lack of resources made you feel desperate. But I don´t think it´s too abusive, just don´t loose ships and you´ll be fine. Agripinaa then will provide you with all the resources that you´ll ever need. The pacing here is pretty good too. You will never feel too powerful, and you can quickly abandon ideas of defending everything, you will have to sacrifice a lot of stuff.
At first it's not a problem, but the more you'll have fleet, the more you'll need new captains to replace the dead one, at this point the timer start to be a problem.
That with the constructions points and the limited number of fleet you can move in the same system makes for a surprisingly great scallability on the campaign, you don't have the snowball problem other game like Total War tend to have.
I even started upgrading Agriworlds. FRICKIN AGRIWORLDS!
