If by abandoning sectors, you put two of your enemies into conflict with oneanother, then that's a boon for your cause.
I tend to mostly focus around my most resource rich areas, and when the situation permits; expand further. Generally, you can expect to create fleets almost completely dedicated to defense, and it is your resources that determine how many/big fleets you can have, and so actively focusing on the most resource rich areas can be beneficial.
Generally remember to prioritise. Missions are the most important, and the area you control is meant to help you in achieving said missions.
I believe I'm holding only four sectors (won't name them so not to spoil anything for your game). One sector I can give up if required, just holding it in case I need it since it's a gateway to other sectors.
Also I found out once you gain a Level 3 research technology then you don't need the Research planet any longer after you purchase the technology. That makes it easier to let go of that sector when no longer required.
