I'm going to hazard a guess that even if I do catch or kill one, there will be absolutely nothing I can do with it except grumble over the time I wasted. xD
Dang. That's lame. It should cause some destruction if you ask me. And probably get a nasty tooltip message about killing endangered species.
In SW a whale has 2500 mass, should be easy to lift for most cranes / vehicles.
Always wanted to catch one, they're seemingly rare and allegedly spawn only around the arctic. Can't recall the last time I've spotted one during regular gameplay. Did some prolonged shark hunting sessions a good while ago, back when sharks stopped spawning. Never spotted a whale during those hunting trips. Been using an old deprecated sonar, which would give you target mass when multiplying signal strength and distance.
I see them fairly often. This was the first time I saw one that deep (I was using an anglerfish hotspot; not sure how deep it actually was due to angles, I had 260m of line out and was going about 25kmh, but I have a lot of weight blocks on my net block so the line was pretty straight. Maybe 230-250 meters?)
Normally I see them right on the surface, splashing around. Once I almost ran into one of the things. while I motored a little sailboat out through the icebergs.
