Controlling a winch on a different vehicle from elsewhere.
Hi all,

So I'm basically building an exploration pod thing attached to a crane. It's basically a cube attached to a winch, but still, exploration pod.

It's controlled from the deck but I also want it controlled from within the pod (up and down).

I have tried connecting composites but I am connecting composites on 2 different vehicles (the winch, and then buttons on the separate pod.

Is there a workaround for this?

Note that in this setup you don't actually need to connect the radio transmitter composite lines to each other as they are set to the same channel. Also note that the electrical connectors are really only needed if you have anything powered on the attached vehicle, or you want to lock something in place.

Not sure how to make it work, but I think the remote control would be the way to do it

I'll have a look - cheers

I never got that working either. It seems everything that we try to do that should work and does work on older builds seems not to work on new builds like it requires something new to do it or the feature is broken. Good luck on remote control anything right now because Ive been trying to get remote control of a plane I made and have used mutliple controllers and versions of controllers and none work while I can get a model off the workshop that uses controllers set up the exact same way that does work.

A guy commented on a post I made about getting winches to work remote controlled or controlling the winch from the actual harness itself but its been weeks ago he said how to do it but I was too new to understand what he was talking about so I never figured it out and abandoned controlling the winch harness from the harness or a harness on a winch all together...

Im sure there is a way but its probably going to be really complicated. The video tutorials for remote control winch dont work Ive tried several of them. SO many features in this game are broken and no longer work after updates and so many people think they arent because their creations that use them work but if they were try and build a new creation they would see it doesnt work like it used to or at all. Like Paintable indicators is suddenly broken for me as well. Old creations light up new dont.

Eaglezero yeah I can understand where youre coming from. I'm going to have a look at radio signals and see if they will work.

It's a similar sort of situation with lifeboats being released from inside, as opposed to the winch on the main entity.

I wish I had back those hours of my life wasted on following tutotrials that do not work anymore and no one bothers to put that in their video description or comments and there is no official record of working features or documentation so its sink or swim do a bunch of stuff people show you in videos that works for them follow it to the letter and it will not work for you try several other methods before you resort to the forums and have to be spoon fed the answer by someone experienced in playing the game who can make a work around other wise abandon the idea cause it wont work.

Sadly that has been the case for me over and over and over again...
Diesiel engine chopper,
Jet engine Chopper ,
Rotors.
Winches... with harness.
Radio Controlled plane,
Submarine pumps wont push out water so I can surface and everything is hooked up
Beyond building a basic boat or helicopter using a workaround ...
All of it DOES NOT WORK LIKE IN THE VIDEOS.

The one thing people frequently miss when attempting this setup for the first time is realizing that electricity does not transmit to the pod without extra steps. For simplicity, start with a battery.

To remote control a winch with a radio transmitter, you need a few things:

On your main craft:
1) A radio set to receive and the appropriate frequency, i.e. off and 4
2) A microcontroller with a composite input feeding channel one and channel two composite read controllers linked to on/off outputs
3) Controls for the winch

On the pod you need:
1) A radio set to transmit and the appropriate frequency, i.e. on and 4
2) A microcontroller with two on/off inputs connected to a 2 channel composite write controller linked to a composite output
3) A battery
4) Controls for the winch

Setup:
1) Connect electricals: main craft transmitter and winch to main craft power supply, pod transmitter to the battery
2) Connect controls on the pod to the composite write controller inputs
3) Connect the composite write output to the transmitter on the pod
4) Connect the composite output from the transmitter on the pod to the transmitter on the main craft
5) Connect the composite output from the main craft transmitter to the composite read microcontroller
6) Connect the on/off outputs from the composite read controller to the appropriate winch control inputs
7) Rise.

Optional addition:
1) Electrical connectors on both the main craft and the pod to lock the rig in place and recharge the pod's battery battery.

Thank you for this Aven - I dont suppose you know of any videos out there with the means to show how to show the setting up of a radio? Electricity is sorted, but the other steps...less so.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Thanks for this Aven! it worked. Just a question -- if I want to add more buttons / add a lever what would I need to add in the microcontrollers?

On the pod/harness side, the composite write controller, you'll need to add inputs for the additional controls, then adjust the number of channels on the composite write [on/off] module in the logic. Connect your new inputs to these additional channels, noting which command is attached to each channel.

On the main craft side, the composite read controller, you'll need to add outputs for the additional components you have added, then switch to the logic and add a composite read [on/off] for each additional channel that you added. Set the channels of these new modules, connect them all to the composite input, and then connect them to their appropriate output.

Well done Aven. Props to you. Glad there are at least people around the forums who can get around things.
