I'm trying to start a forest fire so I can try out some water bombers, I purposefully crashed an A318 into a forest, the plane is engulfed in flames and has been for 5 minutes, no tree has been set on fire despite the fact that the plane is resting on a bed of trees whilst surrounded by trees.

its weird sometimes, if you into the mission editor and place a fire directly on a tree it works

Well in the end I had to start a new save because after returning to base I realized my save got corrupted or something because there were no fluid gantries.. anywhere..

I load a helo up with downward facing illumination flare dispensers and assign them all to one button. I then proceed to commit virtual arson with one (Agonizingly slow) press of a push button. Works every time. (Flares placed right next to tree trunks have a high likelihood of catching fires.)

they broke the game even more, i set a grill thing on fire with a jet engine that i made and it was covered in fire and the ground didnt even think about catching fire!

Forest fires work fine, they're just less likely to insta-combust like they did before. Before one stray flare in a forest meant world-wide calamity, now you need 3 or 4.

so a jet engine overheating and lighting the whole creation on fire isnt enough to start a fire now?

It will, just not instantaneously as if the forest was made of absolutely dessicated wood. I can crash a car into the woods and set it on fire and it'll happily set the forest on fire, just give it a minute.

If the trees have fallen over from the crash then they no longer combust.
Before this change forest fires used to absolutely kill and cripple multiplayer servers, now we can have barbeque.

well, i got a fire, but it took way longer then it should have, the fire that i started with the jet grill i made for some reason had to spread to the rest of the grill first to actually start a fire, mind you, its really easy for wood to get ignited by sparks and such if its dry enough

also let me remind you the devs arent exactly good, they banned one of my friends (fredmeisterparry) because he showed them evidence that the game was buggy and such
