Winch changes
Started a new career this evening just for something to do and I spawn in my usual ship and I get a message that the winches have been removed (deprecated?) so I realise I need to do the new winch system so I fiddle with that only to realise you can only have one on/off go through the electrical cable and nothing electrical through a fluid cable... eh what? Am I missing something here? Originally I had a large winch at the rear of my boat that included an electrical connector, magnet, small connector AND a fluid connector for pumping out ships or what have you. I can now not use these at all without losing the fluid connector or just having the electrical connections? How is this any better than what we had before? Plus we now have to ADD a single block also. I must be missing something that allows the transfer of electrical AND fluid in one cable.

Wow. This guys angry over the fuel hoses I mentioned. Just trying to offer a couple of workarounds hotshot. GFYS then.

The reason is according to newsposts that you can in the future refuel by interacting with the winch directly, and then the vehicle. Refueling in multiplayer is a pervasive issue that has been there for years.

The new winches also are much more flexible and they allow setups that simply weren't possible before. Now if only we had a pulley...

Yes, exactly what Rasputin says plus possible ropes breaking on high tension. We can't allow logic connections between objects that not connected to each other.

Again who said anything about refuelling? There are multiple other uses for fluid connectors. Now that I have to choose between a selection of electrical connectors OR a fluid connector is a disaster.

Can someone point me to a mod so that I can use the old winches in new saves?

Nevermind, I've sorted it. Thank god for the modding community.

Not seeing how this improvement could possibly be a disaster? The new winches are far superior to the previous omni-connector placeholders.

So you need two winches now to transfer fuel or electric?
This is the disaster?

I'm glad you found a mod solution, I would just mark your craft as "modded" in the workshop if you have it available for others to play with.

When your ship is small and has been the same size since I got the game then yes it is a disaster. Every ship I have that uses the winch system will now need to double up on winches. This isn't about workshop material. This is about how my ship interacts with my group's ships. We all use the same winch designs, port designs so that we can help each other out. Now just by chance we have been using fairly old saves of which we have many so we can continue our games at least. Having to add ANOTHER winch is a large error in this games development aka a disaster.

You must've had absolutely no troubles in life if a change in a game that is in active development costing you a few minutes is a "disaster" in your books.
The game even has a large, unmissable watermark that signifies that previous saves may become moot.

Sorry, I just don't see it...

I have several boats from a year-and-a-half ago that won't even run now. LOL

Adding another winch is least of my concerns and I would call a boat not functioning at all a far bigger "disaster" but I'm not asking for a rollback on progress.

What the new winches can do far outweighs the minor inconvenience. I would maybe try to modify your design to adapt as development continues rather than go the mod route.

But, to each his own. Good luck with the mod.

Don't try to balloon it, within the game yes this is a disaster, outwith the game of course it's not a disaster. Try to keep it relevant and not derail this into something it's not. You don't understand because the change hasn't affected the way you play the game. Wait till they change something that does affect you and how you play the game.

We don't have power wires on hoses IRL. Unless it's some sort of umbilical cable which is far from being a regular thing on regular small boat. And IRL ropes, cables and hoses can break and by that you lose fluid/data link between objects that were connected by it. I think it's fair mechanics and this is what we are trying to achieve and this is why old winches is not an option and eventually can be completely removed from the game.

Manual refuelling will be much easier than current messing with connector's physics. Creating automatic systems should cost something and always be more complex to implement.

What do you mean "wait until they change something that does affect you"? Every single addition, and every single change has affected what i build and how i build. Most of my 80+ vehicles i've rebuilt more than once, partially to update, partially to deal with changes.

The largest amount of work for me was the engine update, but most of my sizeable fleet got significant performance boosts out of it, even though obviously fixing overunity meant having to deal with higher fuel amounts.

Same for me. This is exactly the reason why I don't post anything. I have many vehicles for my own use but they very quickly become obsolete due the changes that we're getting with updates.

This is one of the reasons why i don't post many of my vehicles

Most of those connections are going to purpose built microcontrollers or buttons tied to them.
