This is also true for every single dedicated server out there.
At least i've never heard of one requiring payment...

Erm, just to be clear: There is no licensing fee for the server software. But you may have to rent the hardware if you do not host it on your home PC.

Well, yes. VPS is usually the cheapest way to achieve this, though i wouldn't recommend it for people who have no experience playing with one.

EA games (BF series namely) only have rented dedics (or used to have, but last EA game i played was BF3), unless you count better dedics reverse-engineered by community, those are free.

Also some Steam games will only grant the dedic package to a game client owner so you cannot random host server without owning the game.

While it's kind of expected for EA releases as they're huge enough to easily stand on their own, i really don't see justification for any other game to have dedicated tools behind a paywall :lunar2019deadpanpig:

Can't tell really, i'm avoiding games that do not have free dedics as much as possible tbh, i would regret money i spent on games such as GTAV if i would not already played the hell out of them just because they have P2P lobbies only..
