Docking Doors
I'm trying to use the docking doors and have a way to climb between them. I've used Tajins idea of having the "connected" property trigger the doors to open, but how do you get between them?
If I use ladders, since there's a two block difference (one for each dock door), the player stops climbing.
I'm trying the concept of having a ladder lower inside the door, but hoping someone has a better way.
It's for a multi part sub-dock I'm trying to build. The first chamber can be rotated/moved and lowered to attach to your sub. Once that's connected, it raises to its original position and there is another "back/forth" chamber which then transfers you to the main base.

Thanks.

As a real-life example, some hatches come with a motorized step board. You could probably make one of those. A simple rotor that lifts a small ledge or platform you can stand on from the neighboring wall, so you have more support lifting yourself out, and it's out of the way when you don't need it.

Hi Rasputin - do you know of an example build I could look at?

I built a raising platform in my sub but I want to make the dock work with all sort of subs.

As it is, it will raise/lower/rotate and move so easier to dock with sub.

I can mock up something for you in an hour or so when i have a free moment, or i can sneak it in to that, whichever you prefer.

I'll upload a video and the base in progress in 5 - thanks

Here's video of docking base - https://streamable.com/9xm02d
Here's link to the base - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2046017255
(Base should be minus test sub)

Would be great for people to take it and make it better or try the idea in their builds :-) Hoping to have digital screens for the process, reset option so it goes back to start. Lots of work ahead

what about building a ladder you can raise up though the hole.. I dont know if there is enough room, or maybe a tiny elevator you can stand on that lift you up so you can "jump" into the vehicle that are docked above. You can build the controls into the floor of the elevator.
( as long as you can climp up high enough and see a seat you can "teleport" your self up though the docking ports and into the seat )

I didn't have a simple mode save handy, so i mocked up something for you instead:

There's no reason it shouldn't work in simple mode. It'll whine about the batteries though, but they shouldn't be an issue.

Ah, yes the seats are a good idea. I'll try out your Stepper now.
pkempf400 Apr 3, 2020 @ 9:23am
Perfect - the seats are working and so does the stepper. The stepper is more for the vehicle attached, and the seats are for the docking chamber. Now to try setup controls from the main control room. Pity tracks don't stay where they were left when no commands are sent. Weight of submarine pulls on the track, and so need to use a controller to stop it.

Thankyou.

You can use grabbers with brakes on to function as a type of track that stays perfectly still.

Hi Rasputin - I've tried using grabbers, but if the vehicle connected to it is too heavy, the brakes fail. The only way is to have the grabber tracks rotated so it grabs at intervals and not as a track. Any suggestion? (I even tried with 5 grabbers side-by-side and it it still moves)

Ok, figured out - brake control needed to be connected to grippers object and not track object.
If the controller was on the track object, it ignored the brake signal.

... and they're broken again. Worked for a whole 2 minutes. Will republish build.

According to my tests, the grabber tracks essentially have no force limit, they may yield a little bit to sudden force though, so make sure they're long enough. I know from my tests that the brake on a grabber track is able to keep 5 large SRBs still.

If you've got the time, could you look at the uploaded build? The buttons aren't sending a signal to the tracks, yet the grabbers brakes seem to fail (light on means the brakes should be on, yet the tracks still move). Apologies but everything is built in basic mode.
