What determines if and when a megalodon will spawn?

Do they spawn in one area and then stay there, or do they have a constant chance of spawning near you? I have seen two megalodons so far on my career save, both pretty far away from eachother.

I believe they only spawn (or have significantly higher chance of spawning) in the arctic. As far as i've seen anyone say anything about them, there are no other factors

All megalodons I have seen spawned in the warmer area. The northernmost megalodon I have seen was about halfway to the arctic.

I know I'm late to the party, but I've just today found a megalodon in my world when it was raining, late during the evening, it was near Terminal Camodo. I'm pretty sure this is the condition for Megalodon and Kraken, it has to be around Evening / Night, Raining / Stormy weather for them to spawn in. Ive seen a kraken spawn in naturally with these conditions as well, never seen any of them near Artic from my experience.

Spawning behavior and the game in general has changed just a little bit in 3 years.
