How do you drop items which are picked up and disappear?

When I pick up small items, they get launched into space... I assume this is the animation for picking something up and going into the inventory - but I have no menu to drop them.... How do I drop these items?

The large items are no problem, but the small items which disappear I have no clue how to drop... I've tried every single keyboard control with no luck.

Turns out they get launched a few KM away every time I try to pick them up....

And it turns out they get stuck on the skybox....... Approx 940m above sea-level...

I thought they were underwater, maybe, but I was getting further away the deeper I went.... So, at least I know what happens to them now...
