the gearbox has arrows, those indicate which side of your assembly is the "1" and which side is the "3", depending on how you connect it...
If your gearbox is pointing (with its arrows) towards the engine, then your engine will be a 1 and your gearbox/propellers will be the 3, which means that the gearbox will convert 1 rotation of the engine, into 3 rotations of the gearbox/propellers, in other words the ratio is 3...
HOWEVER be aware that not only the rotations will be converted, but also the TORQUE which i believe represents "strength" but it will be converted in the opposite direction, this means in the same example i gave you where the arrows are pointing towards the engine, that the torque at the shaft will be 1/3 or 33% of the engines output, so you have 300% the rotations, but 33% the torque, if you invert the gearbox, you'll get 300% the torque, and 33% rotations...
Edit: I forgot to add that you have 2 settings per gearbox, you can have 1:2 and 1:3 and switch between them with a toggle button, it's useful for a reverse if you use "1:-1" as your second setting...
(i'm quite new to the game so if this is wrong in any way please correct me anyone!)
