How do you recharge the battery?

If you built in an electric generator then your battery power will replenish while the engine is running.
If you have an electric attachment port on your ship you can hook it to a second ship and transfer power between them.
You could tow your ship back to a dock and respawn it.

I have a ton of generators hooked up to revving diesels, but batteries are not charging.

Make sure the electrical connection between the generator and the batteries exists is the only thing I can recommend unless your generator to engine setup is incorrect.

Generators are connected to all of the batteries. Engines are connected to generators via gearboxes.

If you upload it to the workshop I can have a better look

Well, I figured it out, but still thank you for trying. Turns out you have to place gearbox backwards in order for generators to work. That's a bit counterintuitive.

I assume you mean that the A side of the gearbox needs to be towards the generators (or propellors) and I agree it seems backwards.

However, if you build a gearbox on the power output of the engine, it actually attaches to the B side leaving the A side free to build towards your generator. So if you do it in that order it works out.

In short, when you place a gearbox on something you attach it with the B side.

The funny thing is, the 1:3 ratio in the gearbox is B:A, so yeah its backwards xD

Yeah, gearing down would give you significantly less power :)

Tip.
As the above say, then use a gearbox to "speed up" the power production.

The gearbox can be installed in 2 different directions, making the gearbox run from
A-B
or
B-A

As you might have notised if you click the gearbox ( with arrow icon ) you can change the gear ration.

Example a gearbox that run from A-B with a gear ratio 1:3 means 1 divived by 3 = 0.33
BUT
if you turn the gearbox arround so it now run from B-A, then you also change the "gear" to 3:1 instead.
With other words now the output of the gearbox run much faster.

Gearbox A-B speed

1:1 = 1,0000* Speed
5:6 = 0,8333* Speed
2:3 = 0,6667* Speed
5:9 = 0,5556* Speed
1:2 = 0,5000* Speed
2:5 = 0,4000* Speed
1:3 = 0,3333* Speed

Gearbox B-A speed
1:1 = 1,0000 *Speed
6:5 = 1,2000 *Speed
3:2 = 1,5000 *Speed
9:5 = 1,8000 *Speed
2:1 = 2,0000 *Speed
5:2 = 2,5000 *Speed
3:1 = 3,0000 *Speed

An example of usage in game.
If you want your propellar to go fast, then you need to install the gearbox so B is connected to the engine and A is connected to the Clutch, and then connected to the propellar.

Engine -> Gearbox 3:1 - Generator -> clutch > propellar.

Reason why you want to have the generator inbetween the gearbox and cltuch is that you can turn off the clutch and your generator will still produce power as long as the engine is on.
