What is the point of higher gear ratios for pivots and hinges?
Using higher gear ratios on robotic components such as pivots seem to make them both weaker and slower. Shouldn't it instead be a trade-off where one gives the component more torque and the other higher speed?

No, it makes them slower but stronger.
I tested it, higher gear ratios makes them both slower and weaker. You can test it yourself: Make a 9x9 ramp mounted on a compact pivot on a corner edge. Try to make the pivot hold an angle that keeps the ramp suspended parallel to the ground. A 1:1 pivot will hold the ramp firmly even as you get up on the ramp and jump on it while a 1:32 won't even be able to hold the ramp parallel without any extra weight on top of it.

you're saying very litte about how you're testing it though

velocity pivots or robotic ones ?
are PIDs involved or static input ?

In my tests (using a -1 input for all of them), the 1:32 could lift weights where the 1:1 wouldnt even budge.
I tested it with direct input from throttle levers and the "numerical" logic component, some passing through numerical switch boxes. I used them for the ramp and doors on this aircraft:

The doors and ramps are all set to the 1:1 ratio and they perform much better like that, if you set them to 1:32 they will be visibly much weaker.
I had the same experience as you: 1:1 ratio gear moves quickly and with a lot of force, 1:32 ratio gear moves very slowly and with very little force. Could this a bug?

The higher ratios should be slower and more powerful, and the lower ones should be faster but weaker. It sounds like this still isn't working correctly or there's a bug that stops it from working in some situations.
Thank you very much for your reply RoboJon:steamhappy:
This is still very much a problem...
it's still broken for me, on most cases, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. very randomly starts working or not
i got it working(randomly), but whenever i anchor myself to the ground with mag-alls in order to not flip when lifting stuff, the hinges just die
and whenever im not sitting on the vehicle it also stops working

edit: only sometimes

Pivots, and other multiobject connecting stuff just seems too have issues .

Trying too build a crawler.
Randomly not rotating, getting stuck, object having odd elasticity too movements, etc.
But lifting 2 containers from 40m away, well i guess its working
nice, its 2023 and the bug still exists, if i set the piston to 1:32 its slides out from the weight of 1 "mag all" xd
It is a physics calculation issue. It can be caused by several different factors, so there is not really a simple solution for it.

How do you know this?
