Stormworks: Build and Rescue

Extremely low FPS at home base after spawning a ship
I just bought this game, was hoping to download and play around in some of the bigger ships in the wrokshop, but after I spawn one in, my fps goes from 80 fps to less than 5 fps... and stays there until I can somehow manage to get the ship away from the home island...

Is this normal? Why is it do bad? I'm actually thinking of just refunding this game and waiting until they fix this issue... or is there a way to get the ships to spawn out in the open ocean?

Just need some help... really disappointed and slightly annoyed atm...

So as it stands, larger ships do cause a lot of lag around the larger islands. When I say 'larger' I mean the kind of ships that take up all of the larger editing area on the creative island. That being said, there are other parts of the game that seem to cause a lot of lag. You can edit some of these in the graphics settings:

  • Lights. Try turning off lights and/or removing them from your vehicle
  • Wildlife. Some users have reported that having wildlife enabled lowers FPS
  • Shadows
  • General graphics quality

That being said, the larger ships require a lot of processing power to simulate due to how complex they are. Keep in mind that if you have a ship with lots of logic components, the game has to simulate every single one. I play on a laptop, and I find that once I turn the graphics down, then my FPS goes to around 15-25 on some of the larger ships around the large islands. Its still not great, but keep in mind that this is an early access game and therefore it is not fully optimised.

The main cause of lag is the physics component. In order for you to have playable FPS, you may consider having a processor with high single thread performance. Currently, the CPU like 8700k will give you a substantial boost to your gameplay. Once you make an upgrade, you may also switch PhysX to CPU only.

My specs are plenty good, I can tell you. In fact, once I manage to actually get out to sea, my fps jumps back up to about 50 to 60 depending on the size of the ship

Specs:
CPU Ryzen 3 1200
Mobo: MSI B350M Gaming Pro Micro ATX
RAM: 32GB of DDR4
GPU: GTX970

All with the latest drivers ect

You indeed have a good computer and specs. However, Ryzen may not be the one having the better characteristics for heavy duty physics calculations. I am in the same boat with you because I have FX and it sucks big time.

Regardless, it should not be THAT bad... We're talking a MASSIVE drop in fps that is only in that one location... a very important location... one where you have attempt to board a ship, navigate through it to find the bridge... and then press who knows how many buttons to get it to work and sail...

Doing all that with sub 5fps, after you had been playing with 80+fps... is just... 100% unplayable... and REALLY needs to be looked at asap by the devs...

I think also the transition locations (bench,land-to-sea,port,proximity to sealevel) may trigger extensive physics pre-calculations.

People with Ryzen CPUs have complained before about this kind of issue. It appears that where we use multiple threads to simulate different parts of the game in parallel, sometimes Ryzen CPUs become extremely slow, presumably because there is some kind of thread scheduling issue or something like that. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the kind of thing we can Google for answers. I would bet the solution is probably very straight forward but we have no Ryzen computers in the office to test and not sure where to start at the moment. To clarify, we are only creating threads when the game starts, and using mutex and signals to sync work per frame, and this is very low overhead on intel. We will continue to look into it.

First off, thank you for taking the time to respond to this! Its always nice to see the devs active and helping to answer questions regarding issues. Not many do this sadly...

Secondly... this news honestly really sucks... I was really looking forward to enjoying this game, but if I cant spawn in a larger ship without the fps dropping to almost nothing, then I see no reason to keep playing it...

I hope you get it worked out soon... would really like to enjoy this game to its full potential

we really want to get this fixed too. Perhaps someone with this problem with fast Ryzen CPU could message me on Discord if they have a bit of time to help us test?

thanks

I have some days off of work coming up soon. I'd be willing to spend a few hours helping to test if you want. :)
