A cruel fairytale of Weisse Hexe protecting her kingdom of Eylstadt for the one she loves. One of the most underrated anime (and, in my opinion, best) shows of 2016 that unfortunately suffered from being overshadowed by community favorite fall runs such as Yuri on Ice and Sound Euphonium 2. Izetta: The Last Witch follows young princess Fine and her loyal companion Izetta, who both are willing to sacrifice everything in order to protect what they cherish. It's a war story of uncompromised desicions, painful sacrifices, nation's loyalty and unwavering leadership. And of course, loving someone unconditionally more than life itself. Both gritty realistic and sweetly dreamlike, Izetta is a show that sincerely tries to reach hearts of militaristic and shoujo ai addicts alike. With memorable designs from Bunbun, one of the creators of Yuuki Yuuna mahou shoujo series, and well-animated dynamic battle sequences.

Set in alt universe europe at the outbreak of ww2. Mostly fictional characters but some are real (Prince Henry was the younger brother of King George the VI irl)
We follow the stugles of Eylstadt ( Enlarged Liechtenstein?) against the germanian empire through politics, propaganda and yes flashy battles showing how in a straight fight Eylstadt wouldn't last all that long.
The show has a very strong first half but falls apart in the last few episodes, (where things stop being beliveable even "in world"). Pretty good visually with some awsome battle scenes I found it very entertaining to watch.

This is the first Video I have bought on steam and Im pleased the say the streaming quality is decent. For those of us who live in countrys where the Blue-ray / Dvd are licenced but never released I feel this makes a decent substitute to legaly own a copy incase licensing issues make the legal streams disapear in the future.

Very first, I should note that you can watch the whole series on Crunchyroll for free (albeit with lower resolution unless paid). Also, both there and on Steam the English subtitles are hard-coded and the (only) voice track is Japanese (sometimes the characters speak a bit of accented German).

I liked this anime series. It starts out a bit slowly but then quickly picks up pace, with both political intrigue and action, mundane and supernatural. I binged it through over two evenings and didn't grow bored.


Alternate history Europe has all the nations' names switched, like Germany -> Germania, and Soviet Union -> Volga Federation. Many countries' governments have likewise been altered, e.g. Germany having its (to put it lightly) controversial leader replaced by a devious emperor. It's an interesting way to avoid some of the darker aspects of WW2.

That is not to say the series lacks violence. Actually there is still plenty of dark stuff, just not the most controversial kind, which is left only implied. There are also various parallels to the historical WW2, spotting of which surely delights history enthusiasts.


Lady Finé, the heiress of the protagonistic alpine state of Eylstadt, and the witch Izetta are the protagonists and it's implied they have a relationship of platonic love. Mind you, with Izetta's huge... assets, there's some related humor, even if in just a few episodes.

Protagonists want to make the world a better place, and particularly Finé makes it clear she values every life as much as herself. Which is why I found it slightly odd that Izetta doesn't mind slaughtering hordes of soldiers. I guess, end justifies the means.

In addition to the goody-goody protagonists, many other characters make multiple appearances but at least I struggled to remember their names, as there are so many. There are other rulers, like the Germanian emperor, and people working with the war effort on either side: generals, spies, and even common soldiers. They help make the world feel alive, while each one still plays an important role for the plot.


The writing is decent, beside some stereotypical characters and a certain ridiculous technological MacGuffin (spoiler: Germanians can clone people because of course they can). Writing is certainly not stellar, but it gets the job done. Animation is well done and sometimes (in action sequences) milk-smooth. In my opinion, the music was pretty meh though, standard J-POP.

But, in several scenes these come together to produce a genuinely awe-inspiring feeling and effect. While not for the plot, for these scenes the series deserves my praise.

I absolutely loved this anime! It has a decent amount of world building, it's set during an alternate take of WW2 where magic exist. Really great animation, and music to go along. The action and fighting scenes were top notch and highly enjoyable to watch. I highly recommend this!

Pretty fun anime, silly concept but why the ♥♥♥♥ are you here if you don't like silly ♥♥♥♥.

I'd start by saying that I dont watch very much anime at all save for yuri/shoujoai and slice of life comedy content so I'm pretty bias in that regard. Which is why after seeing the artwork I decided to do a bit spoiler free research and considered buying it based on that and its on-sale price of course. This anime like most shoujoai/yuri is simply subtextual but to the degree that it is obviously there (expecially in certain scenes) just lacking in terms of any sexual interaction which I personally dont have a problem with. That said if you're one of those people who considers this a huge indicator as wether to buy or not, this one wont please you in that regard.

However I'd argue it still merits consideration in its own right because the story is rather unique despite it growing a bit less interesting throughout its unfolding. I could've had I wanted too watch this one free on crunchyroll but decided to pick it up on sale to support shoujoai/yuri and this series in whatever small way I can, this and HD content of course. It was def worth it on sale and I felt I got alot more enjoyment out of it then what I payed for. Oh and steam really needs to work on seperating series from your game library, it over populated my recent list which I constantly use so that was pretty annoying.

I watched the first episode expecting another sappy magic girl film. It looked interesting so I bought the series. I ended up watching it straight through and I have to say I was bawling my eys out several times. This is a great film that reaches into your heart and makes you take a hard look at yourself and your place in the world.

7.5/10, ww2 like and pretty good=)
