Golf It!

I hate all the crap that obscures the camera
The camera in this game is reminiscent of some awful N64/PS1/2 games. You tilt slightly to any side and some random obstruction is suddenly in your way! The viewing angle is poor too, in Golf With Your Friends, you can always tell what you basically need to do to get the ball in the hole, with a few exceptions, but this game is so cryptic, at least with the default levels. The 'easiest' map set was filled with ridiculously complicated puzzles that a first timer will find pointlessly annoying.

You're supposed to start easy and work your way up, instead frustrations abound! I enjoy hard levels, it's true, but not when the 'difficulty' comes from crap blocking my view, or some bump/hole in the ground far enough down the course that you can't see it, or how some ground is curved but it's impossible to tell that without just gunning for it.

There's a lot to like about this game, including the level editor and the way you move your mouse to putt the ball in. I think that aspect is cool. But right now, playability itself is sorely lacking. If I could take the editor from this game and the mouse-motion putting and put that in Golf With Your Friends, I would have a far superior game.

Please, fix the camera, and give me some sort of WASD free-roaming camera to quickly inspect the course with. Good difficulty comes from giving the player all the information and allowing them to piece together a solution, not hitting them with asinine obstacles they couldn't see coming!

I think that's a little bit harsh but the free-roam camera is badly needed, I agree - it can be very difficult seeing where you need to go and what is in your way, especially in the darker courses.

Personally I dislike the fact that GFYF has obvious tricks to get the ball in the hole quickly - once you all know where they are, there is no challenge or competition. That said, with the lack of a power bar in this game (which is good), some of the holes where you have to get the exact power to get it in (holes on the top of slopes or hills for example - I'm looking at you hole 17 on the graveyard course) are a little too frustrating and too often down to random luck as to whether you take two shots or ten.

Hey,

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that on certain maps and areas there are a lot of props near the lane which can obscure the camera. Over time I will certainly change those areas and I will also add a Free-Roam camera quite soon. Other than that there will also be small camera overviews of every hole in the future.

Take care,

Jonas

Those are great tweak ideas! Looking forwards to them.
Agree. The camera can get screwed over by a bunch of places where you have to hit a ball. Even worse, is that sometimes the line for where you are aiming, wont work and thus it messes things up. I dont know how this will be handled, but I hope it does get fixed

Yeah I have to agree, I was just playing it for the first time and it was really nice but there was a lot in the way of the camera view, and it was difficult seeing the entire course so I could know where exactly the ball hole was, to plan my shots. The viewpoint center was always stuck to wherever the ball was. I could zoom out and rotate, but even doing that it was still hard to see with some things in the way. I think it'll be a lot nicer when the Free-Roam camera comes though. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

There is already a Free-Roam camera. Press V to activate it. Use WASD, Ctrl and Space for the movement. And leave the camera with V again.

I refunded my purchase over the terrible camera. Not knowing where you're supposed to go and having lots of useless junk in the way of my sight made for an incredibly bad experience.

That isn't explained anywhere ingame.

No, it's not, and it should be. Once I found out though from his reply, it took a minute to get used to moving it around - and once I got the hang of it, it was a lot easier to play, and plan how to go about the hole. I think the only problem I have now, is you can see the whole course and all the other holes around the one you are on. So a few times I had difficulty discerning where the flag for the current hole was - especially on levels like the mines or the graveyard, where the holes are so full of stunt shots and broken up. So it'd be nice if the flag for the hole you were currently on had something to it, to discern it from the others, like a glow, or a different color.

Hey,

The reason why the Free-Roam camera is not mentioned anywhere is because it is still experimental. It can still have some errors on the ball if you are using it in multiplayer as a client. As soon as that is working as intended it will be mentioned ingame.

Take care,

Jonas

Hey,

I haven't done a refund myself yet so I don't know how exactly it works but you might find the answers to request a refund here: http://store.steampowered.com/steam_refunds/

Even if something is experimental, we're here to help you test this game and give feedback. We can't help you though, if we don't know about it. The game is in Early Access, and you even noted on the title screen "Early Access: Expect bugs and unfinished areas." So I think if you mention it in the controls, and just label it "Experimental - please report any bugs", people will understand and report anything that they find that could be wrong. But again, we can't help you with something if we don't know about it. I should not have had to come here to find out about the Free-Roam camera already existing but not labeled.
