Failed to save game
I've made sure the game is added to the exceptions list for my antivirus, both the game itself and the save directory. Oddly, if I delete the save files then it will save twice, and then fail to save every time after that until I delete the save files again. Then two saves, and it's broken again... Any ideas?

Did you figure it out? I just got the game and it keeps saying failed to save! No idea I will keep playing and see if I can figure it out,

Nope, I have to tab out and delete the save every time I want it to make a new save.

FileHandler.cpp:589 ERROR: Failed to replace file C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\SteamWorld Dig 2\savegame_000.dat, error: 1175

$20 for this?

Has anyone found anything about this? I got this free from Twitch Prime, but I can't even play it. It keeps failing to overwrite the save. Adding exclusions on AV does jack.

I've deleted the folder and relaunched the game. I made sure my PC has admin privelages. I made sure to uncheck read only. And it's still happening. I checked the logs, and the issue happens when it tries to overwrite the existing save. This should be up to the Dev to fix this, not us. I am glad I didn't really pay for it.

Hey! Good news!
Apparently it's an antivirus issue, check out this link, and if you want to quick check it, disable it while trying to save and see if it works!

Failed to save game!" / "Failed to save settings!"

Some gamers have received the message "Failed to save game!" or "Failed to save settings!", displayed in red text in the top-left corner of the screen. This has been linked to antivirus programs with ransomware protection. On Windows, it operates on the entire "My Documents" folder, sometimes also preventing legitimate file changes.

The solution depends on which antivirus program you are using, but it should generally be possible to add an exception for SWD2, or for the specific save data folder:

Windows: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\SteamWorld Dig 2\

macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/SteamWorld Dig 2/

Linux: $HOME/.local/share/SteamWorld Dig 2

This does jack dude, its really not the AV I have turned them all off and played the game and I stil get "failed to save"

It's something to do with the backup save file, because I only need to delete each time to get it to work.

All that has already been tried, so that's a no go. No patch, no play.

Sorry to bump a very old thread, but this is the thread that comes up when searching the error on Google... To fix the issue:
  1. Goto your "My Documents/My Games" directory
  2. Open the Properties
  3. Click Security
  4. Click Advanced at the bottom
  5. Under "Owner", click the (change) link (even if it already says your account name)
  6. Type your account name in the "Select user or group" popup (mine was my Microsoft account email)
  7. Click OK to close the "Select user or group" popup.
  8. Before clicking Apply, make sure you check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" checkbox
  9. Click Apply.
  10. You should now be able to save when entering or exiting town, or any other auto-save event.

So far this works for me on Game Pass, thank you!
