Should I play the original first?

I've heard a lot of good things about this game, just wondering whether I should play the first SteamWorld Dig before the second one.

You don't really have to, this game does a great job at explaining what went down in the first game.

You could play it first to have a better appreciation for the improvements made in the sequel, but in an unexpected way (at least for me) playing the original has led to me having a few unanswered questions for fairly spoilery reasons.

So yeah, you don't really need to, but if you LIKE this one I'd say go back and play it. It's still really fun, it's just a fair deal shorter and a bit more random.

I suggest play the original first, the second game is better in many ways making it harder to go back.

Playing the first dig gives you a fair bit of backstory on the missing character. Both are fully standalone titles though, playing either one before the other works just fine.
I would recommend waiting to play heist though, it kind of gives away this one's ending

For me, personally, I decided after finishing Dig 2 to start Heist but midway through I realized how much I really wanted to go back and replay Dig 1 since it'd been a good while. I forgot how many references to Dig 1 there are in both Heist and Dig 2.

It's making me appreciate all the little details they snuck into these games.
