I can't get past the Trial of Skillness
Yes, I've seen the videos and I've read the guide about how to wall jump, but I can't for the life of me get the momentum to continue on through my jumps. I don't know how I did it at the first overhang, but I can't figure out how to keep momentum chain in the third part, as I can't get the timing down. At this rate I'm getting cramps in my thumbs more than progress.

Any advice?

Try jumping a tile behind the flame https://youtu.be/RSuUdzRVQLs?t=492

Ah, I watched your video too. It shows you jumping after the fire tile while you say it otherwise, but I can somehow get the first wall occasionally, but my problem is that I don't know what the button prompt is to activate the wall jump to keep my momentum. I'm trying to figure it out still, but I can't seem to lock the button combo down.

I'm trying to experiment with the gernade launcher, but that can only get me to the left wall, but I have no momentum to cross the gap.

Ok after I typed that reply, I just somehow made the double leap, now I'm at the lone tile cross. (WTF right?) Now maybe I can rocket jump across, but I have the triple mines on, so that might backfire.

And I blew it. Still can't figure out the button combo needed to maintain my momentum.

So I don't know how I did it, but I passed the challenge somehow. But it didn't matter as I died at the rocket challenge anyways since I had a bad run and used True survivor already.

I'm going to bed this challenge is too much.

----- I'm in the same boat as Zermerus. I can pass any / all of the other trials with only moderate difficulty. Where's the Trial of Skillness is literally down knowledge & timing. Player reaction time, device input time, program frames per second all can affect the timing. And then there's knowing all the ways to 'glitch / break' the jumping mechanics in the player's favor.

----- I know most if not all the ways to 'glitch / break' the jumping mechanics, my only problem is getting the timing down for actually doing them. 1 frame too early or 1 frame too late and I just can't seem to get most to work.

It's really kinda finnicky, and honestly they should've maaaybe given you a bigger window, but I did eventually figure it out. It's just that, as I said, it's a pain to get to work right. There's been times where I've done the same thing and nothing happened, and in all honesty I had to figure it out myself cause no video in the world is really gonna explain how it works.

What works best for me is: Running then jumping onto the wall and WITHOUT LETTING GO OF RUN jump off of it within a second of so of touching it.

Thing is.. if you're too slow, it doesn't work.. and sometimes, if you're too fast, it doesn't work. To be frank, I think this mechanic could've used some more testing/tweaking.

I don't think it's a glitch/break at all. It just requires much more precise timing than any part of the game previously. And this put a strain on the control scheme in general, which is not exactly up to par when compared with more skill-based platformers like Super Meat Boy etc. Nevertheless, once you know how it works, you should be able to reliably do it after a few tries.

The key in my opinion is to jump from the wall as soon as you touch it. Not "within a second", more like within a couple of frames, so it is difficult.

Also keep in mind that it if you do it properly where this is first needed in the test of skillness, it is then easier to keep pressing left and land on the opposite wall instead of change direction in the middle of the jump, as shown in the video.

However, the next jumps after that are quite more difficult, as you need to do 3 jumps in row without losing momentum. I found that once I know how it works, it was just a matter of trying.

Note that you should keep the run button (shift on keyboard) pressed all the time.

You're arguing semantics, really. But the real issue is that the "couple of frames" isn't immediately after touching the wall. Cause whenever I tried that it didn't work. It has to be a tiny bit after touching the wall, at least that's how I got it to work more consistantly.
Senlin Dec 31, 2017 @ 2:19am
Well, that's a bit weird, because for me it was exactly at the moment, exactly within frames of touching it. Half a second later, for example, would be too late.

I have uninstalled the game yesterday, but you can even see this in the video in this thread. Check it from 7:57. In the first try from this second you can see the jump was done a bit after hitting the wall and it didn't work. The second, successful try, was done exactly at the moment hitting the wall. The first few tries in the next section, on the video, are also done too late, not too early.

Anyway, I don't really want to argue about it, I just hope this will help others who have difficulty in this part.

And by the way, a hint for everyone doing the trials - make sure you turn off the upgrade that increases damage from enemies. I spent a lot of time trying to finish the trials before I realized I have that turned on. After I turned it off I finishing in the first try, thanks to the practice :p.

I struggled with this for literally two hours before I pulled off a single wall jump, but by the end I was able to do it on demand. This was important because I had a lot of trouble with the Trial of Rockets and Trial of Escape, so I ended up having to replay Skillness around a dozen times.

The trick is not to focus on timing your second button press with hitting the wall, as counterintuitive as it is. I tried that for the longest time and couldn't figure out why it was so inconsistent - I'd go from getting it right five times in a row to not being able to pull off a single jump for 10 minutes.

What actually determines whether you execute a wall jump is the timing of the second button press in relation to the initial jump - even if you hit the wall and little later or a little earlier, so long as your timing between the two is consistent, you'll high jump. This is where folk giving advice that you need to press the button before you land on the wall are seeing success. It's closer to a double-tap of the jump button than it is to a second jump.

My advice to anyone struggling is to start timing your jumps with a very rapid double press of the jump button, then slowly increase the time between the presses until you see some success. The sweet spot is pretty similar to how fast you'd perform a double mouse click to open a program.

Once you get the initial double jump, you seem to stay in some sort of combo mode and the timing becomes MUCH more forgiving, allowing you to pinball between the walls for the trial.
I was swearing too much, then i realised i have nothing to prove, to follow exact replicated controls that everyone has to figure out, massive ceebs, idc what the reward is, im not an achie ♥♥♥♥, so i dont care anymore, i did everything else, gg.

This is the one, guys. Got it instantly after reading this.
How do you get into The Trail of Skillness?
I made it up there but it is still locked. I have no idea what to do now.
