REMASTERED to Prepare to Die Edition ReTexture Mod?
Is there a mod that makes Dark Souls REMASTERED look like Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition?

If yes, is it useable online?

Thanks.

That one is not just textures, so probably not safe as the author says. More or less any other ones are fine if it's just re-texture.

Few examples.

The original armours from PTDE: https://www.nexusmods.com/darksoulsremastered/mods/123

A major re-texture of all game:

Not even reshades and retextures?

I feel like there’s not nearly enough differences to justify the time to mod this. My personal opinion of course.

Would be nice if someone could just export Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition textures and put them into REMASTERED.

The only visual difference between PTDE and Remastered is that Remastered has a different bonfire texture, but overall better graphics and higher frame rate.

All you really need is bonfire texture mod of some sort.

But since Remastered has anticheat that can at any time ban you for modding the game, I'd just play vanilla honestly. The bonfire is not worth risking online for personally.

That's just simply not true. When I watch this video I see a lot more differences than bonfire textures. Pretty much all the textures are different, the lighting is different, the colors are different, the textures look sharper in the original, etc. PTDE has a way better, darker vibe and atmosphere than the REMASTERED version. There's a clear difference between the two games in pretty much every scene that video is showing. I prefer the look of the original.

The REMASTERED version actually looks terrible if you compare it to the original vision of PTDE. It's like a bad chinese knockoff, they ruined the lighting in so many areas. It's like playing a mobile version of Dark Souls compared to the original.

Though it's true that the REMASTERED version plays a lot better, this is why I want to have the best of both worlds, the gameplay of the REMASTERED version with the look of PTDE.

Personally while I see so much difference to want to mod the game over. But I understand the sentiment.

The only real difference is lighting and constrast. The texture is probably not that different beyond a straight upgrade from PTDE to Remastered.

PTDE had a more cunning use of lighting and contrast because the game's texture quality was really low since at the time Dark Souls was a low to mid budget game and they also ran out of budget during development (hence why the second half of the game was incomplete) and to hide the low res textures they used lighting and contrast to their advantage so the game would still look good despite bad textures. But with Remastered, the team who is NOT FromSoft, probably felt that now they had better textures, they probably didn't need to use the same lighting and contrast configuration as the assets can stand on their own now. You can agree or disagree on that sentiment but that's probably what they did.

So I'd be on the look out for lighting and contrast related mods.

Just be warned that with the game's anticheat, all mods are used at your own risk.

You can also try lowering the lighting options in the options menu a little more and see if it improves the atmosphere.

Lastly, players making this kind of comparison videos can come in with an agenda. So it's possible they either cherry pick the location to present the PTDE in a better light or even mod it, to craft the subtle narrative that PTDE is better visually. I am not accusing that video of being that specifically, but it's possible since there was indeed a lot of backlash on the release of Remastered when it came out and people clutched the pearl on any and everything to try and paint the Remastered as the worse one including but not limited to accusing the game of bad graphics. Just something to consider.

From my personal experience of playing PTDE un-modded (but I had downgraded the texture due to bad PC at the time). The lighting between the game while is different in detail if you just stand there staring at the wall, sure, but the overall experience when just playing the game as normal is more or less the same.

So first, can we agree that the bonfire texture is not the only difference then?

Let's assume that the video is not fake / modded / altered. If you check that video I linked ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2eos3V7jTI ) at 2:33, you can see the difference in texture sharpness on that helmet. The difference is night and day, the original looks like an actual helmet with battle damage on it while the REMASTERED version looks like cheap plastic, with basically no detail.

The Gaping Dragon at 13:38 is another great example of a clear downgrade in texture detail.

Yes we can. I'd forgotten about the lighting changes. But as I said, I barely notice them when playing the game. I only noticed the bonfire changes.

That part of the cinematic is rendered in the engine. The models are actually the same if you look closely. The new one also bears the same scratches on the model itself. It's just the lighting is cast differently. The angle might even be the same, just with different spotlight strength. It is not the most flattering but as I said before, when you actually play the game most of the lighting differences you won't even register.

If you believe the Remastered's lighting is too strong, which I can agree it's stronger than PTDE overall, you can also just dim the brightness setting to try and recreate it and see if it helps.

But if you want to mod it, sure go ahead, just be aware of the risks.

.......................................................................................................................................
.......................................................................................................................................

Also, it feels like the video maker altered the PTDE in some way either with modding or some other methods but passed it off as the original footage. Because I can tell you that jail cell you are at the start of the game at 2:46 of the video looked horrible on PTDE and with even brighter lighting than on Remastered.

In fact the entire Undead Asylum looked horrible on PTDE when you play it. I can say that with confidence because I played the tutorial a few times on the original setting before I changed the rendering quality for my bad PC due to unplayable frame rates, and PTDE looked horrible until you reached Firelink Shrine. The entire Undead Asylum on PTDE seems to forgot to turn on shadow (beyond rooms meant to be close to pitch black) so the moment the sky is visible from a room everything in that room becomes flat. This includes the starting jail cell, the hall way with the bow and arrow guy that runs away, the courtyard with the bonfire and the next room with Asylum Demon and the stairs up to the crow.

The grasses in the courtyard also looked disgustingly bad on vanilla PTDE. It looks like green and grey yarns just filled the ground instead of grass and stone. It definitely did not look nearly as good as what's depicted on the video.

Unless there's something deeply wrong with the copy of PTDE I played or this guy altered the PTDE copy they had.

Yeah I know the models are the same, I am talking about the textures, details, lighting and colors.

Though if the lighting was made so bad that it takes away the details from the textures then they have made the textures worse as well. It doesn't matter what way they reached the end result, the end result is still the same: worse looking textures.

I have been playing with lowered brightness for a while now, but I wanted to spice things up a bit more for the next playthrough by making the game look as good as it does in PTDE in this video.

I guess one way to be sure if this video is altered or not is to test both games myself and compare the non-modded PTDE with the REMASTERED version. I'll update this post with screenshots if I get around to it.

Thank you for your informative contribution to the post.

That one is not just textures, so probably not safe as the author says. More or less any other ones are fine if it's just re-texture.

Thank you. This is exactly what i've been looking for.

These all look really good. I guess the people who did the REMASTERED version must have messed with the textures too, because that first mod is just the original DS textures yet it looks so much better than the REMASTERED version, the detail is back on the armor and that plastic look is gone.

Btw, did you actually test these mods online yourself?

All these mods and few others were excessively used online by me. If you want to feel absolutely safe take a look at this mods and it's functions: https://www.nexusmods.com/darksoulsremastered/mods/466
