This means you are competing with other hosts on selecting who to summon if you put em in a popular place. It also means that some bosses gets you summoned much more easily, but Elden Ring's OG system in the non-modded version can still get co-op as often using the item and selecting 'far away'.
In DS 1 to 3 players ends up needing to hide their summon signs publicly so people don't suddenly take it.
You need to be in human form to see summon signs, and the duration for which you can see them is theoretically infinite.
To summon someone or be summoned, you need to be within +-10% of the other player's level to appear as a summon. The game has a limited pool of connections it can query at once (~16), but if you use a password to matchmake with only each other, you can completely sidestep these issues and enjoy consistent summoning regardless of level or player activity.
You can summon someone at the very beginning of an area, and have them play with you from the beginning of an area to the end of a boss fight if they survive. There is no restriction on how long they can stay.
In terms of flasks/items needed to faciliate summoning, things are simple. A summoner needs nothing at all to summon effectively other than being human, and if you want to be summoned, all you need is the White Sign Soapstone from Solaire at the back of the Undead Burg bridge where the red dragon perches. This will allow you to place a sign down for anyone meeting the aforementioned criteria to summon you for any area where they haven't beaten the area boss.
